TRAMWAY STOPS AT CLYDE ROAD.

ALTERATION IS WANTED BY WAIMAIRI COUNCIL.

A request that, in the interests of other road users, a change should be made in the manner of arranging tramway stops at Clyde Road, was put befor the Christchurch Tramway Board yesterday by a deputation from the Waimairi County Council The council wants the outbound car to stop at Kuston Street, which is opposite the middle of the Clyde Road loop. It believes that motorists entering Riccarton Road from Clyde Road and turning west hardly expect an outbound tramcar to leave the loop and turn to the wrong side of the road to discharge its passengers. The Works and Traffic Committee will look into the matter and report to the board. Mr H. Kitson said that the Waimairi County Council was in an awkward position in regard to the Clyde Road stop. There were several places which were dangerous and misleading to motorists and the public generally. He explained that the trams stopped twenty-seven feet from Clyde Road corner and blocked the view of motorists coming out of Clyde Road. The Waimairi Council was of opinion that it would obviate a good deal of confusion if passengers were discharged at Euston Street on the outward trips, the cars to go on to Wharenui Road and stay there until ready to return to the city. Mr Kitson also referred to the shunting of cars in Fendalton Road. He suggested that, to reduce the risk of shunting, the cars and trailers should be shunted on Burnside Road. The chairman: Have we noted any serious accidents at Clyde Road? Mr Kitson: Unfortunately, there was a man killed there. The chairman: That had nothing to do with the trams. That was at the other end of the loop. The chairman said that it was a question as to whether the convenience of the residents was to be upset for the sake of traffic arrangements. After further discussion, the deputation withdrew. The board had before it a report dealing w r ith the position

from the general manager (Mr Frank Thompson). It was decided not to release the report for publication. It was agreed to refer the matter to the Works and Traffic Committee for consideration.
