PRESENTATION TO BE MADE TO INSPECTOR

The annual meeting of the Sbuth Canterbury Educational Institute was held on Saturday, Mr W. G. Burns presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet, the latter disclosing a satisfactory balance, were adopted. It was decided to make a presentation to Mr M. M’Leod, senior inspector, at a social gathering. It was reported that an exhibition of work done in South Canterbury schools would be on show in Timaru in June. The following officers were elected: President, Mr W. G. Burns; vice-presi-dent, Mr W. Garton: secretary ami treasurer, Mr Alex. Lindsay; committee of management. Misses Schmidt. Donald and A. Tizard, Messrs Calder, Campbell. Winnington and Malcolm; auditor, Mr B. H. Low; delegate to W.E.A., Miss Ashton; delegates to N.Z.E.1., Mr Burns and Miss Islip. CAMP CANCELLED. The Canterbury Yeomanry cavalry camp, which was to have been held at Pleasant Point has been cancelled. VITAL STATISTICS. The vital statistics for the Timaru district for March are as follows, those for the corresponding month of 1929 being given in parentheses:—Births, males 15 (19), females 18 (15). totals 33 (34); deaths, males 4 (10), females 6 (10), totals 10 (20); marriages, 16 (21), in office 3 (3). The figures for the quarter ended March 31 are: Births, males 60 ( 68), females 61 (45), J totals 121 (113); deaths, males 25 (26), j females 17 (22), totals 42 (48) ; marriages 4S (6), in office 5 (8). PERSONAL. Mr T. Venning has been appointed manager of the South Canterbury Flour Mills Co. Mr Leo Schaab, son of Mr and Mrs H. Schaab, of Regent Street, Timaru, after spending four years at the Maris t Brothers’ Juniorate, Tuakau, left last month to commence his novitiate at Mittagong. in New South Wales. Sub-Inspector Gibson, who has been transferred to Auckland, left yesterday tc take up his new duties. Mr R. B. Bell, of Timaru, a delegate to the Imperial Press Conference, to be held in London, in June, left Timaru yesterday to join the Niagara at Auckland. The South Canterbury Educational Institute at its annual meeting, decided to send a letter to Mr James Methven. 8.A., on his retirement from the service, thanking him for his work on the institute’s behalf.

I . ORARI. : i The continued fine weather is very [ I welcome to farmers in general. Most * !of the farmers in the Orari district i have now gathered their grain and many have finished threshing. The mills, however, are still busy in the district and the fine weather permits ■ them to work continuously. Saturday morning was dull and overcast, following a light shower in the early morning. but the sun soon broke through and the day was bright and fresh. The committee of the Orari Bridge Hall have decided to hold a series of fortnightly socials and euchre tournaments during the winter months. Mr T. Pemberton, who joined the special police for service in Samoa, is on his way south, the corps having been disbanded. Mr G. S. Ridley, the Canterbury Education Board’s Agricultural Instructor for South Canterbury, visited Orari on Friday afternoon. A well attended meeting was held in Geraldine on Saturday afternoon to launch the Obstetrical Appeal Campaign in the Geraldine district. Mes dames G. A. M. Macdonald and W. E. Cook were appointed to organise the campaign in the Orari district, where a canvass will be made this week. Mrs Eric Haultain, Awakeri, Bay of Plenty, arrived on Saturday to spend a holiday in Orari. where she is the guest of her sister, Mrs F. \V. Grayburn, “Thomeycroft.” Mrs R. Taylor, “The Manse,’* Orari, will return this week, after a month's visit to Dunedin. Mr and Mrs Douglas Patterson and family, “Barbarafield.” left on Thursday for their new home in Marlborough. GERALDINE. In connection with the appeal for funds to establish a chair of Obstetrics at the Medical School at Dun edin. the meeting convened by Mrs J. M. Tripp and held in the Parish Hal! on Saturday was largely attended. The Mayor, Mr Kennedy, was in the chair, and on the platform were: Doctors Hislop, Curtis and Mail, Mrs Tripp and Miss Havelaar, the organising secretary, together with Dr W. Irving. The Mayor urged the importance of supporting the movement and Dr Irving gave an address. Mrs J. M. Tripp pointed out ths necessity of the work and appealed to all for support. Miss Havelaar said that Canterbury's quota was £SOOO, but only £2600 was in hand. Geraldine was the first place to raise £7O. Colonel Mackenzie, chairman of the County Council, also spoke. On the motion of Mrs Tripp, the following committee was set up to further the objects i l view: Mesdames J. Barker, Guyon Macdonald. Cook, Drummond Sharpe, L. Williams, Fish, Undrill, Mackenzie, Kennedy, Jackson. Fielden and Neutze, and Messrs Kennedy and Readdie. On I the motion of Dr Hislop, a vote of | thanks was accorded Dr Irving. At | the commencement of the meeting a i total of £7O had been promised and at j the close a sum of £Bl was in hand, ! including one subscription of £25. TEMUKA. I At the Milford Hall on Friday even- | ng, when a harvest home was held for the purpose of augmenting the hall funds there was a large attendance. Music ; for the dancing was provided by Sinclair’s orchestra (Timaru), extras being played by Miss N. Hickey and Mr C. Keiland. Mr W. Seeler was M.C. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss Mathieson (Timaru) and Mr J. M’Millan (Milford), and the Monte Carlo Waltz, was won by Mrs L. Macaulay and Mr W. Shand. At the invitation of Miss Brown an | enjoyable evening was spent at “Dintj ing House'’ by the past and present members of the Methodist Young Women's Bible Classes. Games and competitions were enjoyed, and Miss M. Ellis. Mrs Davey, Miss Levens and Miss Dale contributed music and elocutionary items. After supper Miss Brown called on Mrs A. J. Davey and Miss Hancox to express the good wishes of those present to Miss Burtenshaw, who is shortly to be married. Miss Brown, the leader of the senior class referred to the services rendered by Miss Burten- < shaw to the church and the class and called upon Miss Edna Dale, the class i secretary, to make a presentation of a 1 chiming clock. At the close of the evening Mrs Davey expressed thanks to • Miss Brown for her hospitality. At the annual meeting of the Friend- j ly Fridays’ Association, there were pre- i sent: Messrs G. son had been a successful one in every respect. The Hibernian team had emerged winners. The balance-sheet show-ed a credit of £4 10s. The report and balance-sheet was adopted, lhe election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, the Rev Father Bartley; president, Mr J. Gourley; joint secretaries, Messrs J. B. Davis and George Pierce; individual scorer and press steward, Mr F. Smith; treasurer, Mr B. Maclachlan. It was agreed that the playing conditions be the same as last year with the exception that the crib games be 16 instead of 15. It was agreed to procure a much larger shield.
