Racing and Trotting.

RACING NOTES. « Nominations for the Hororata Racing Club's meeting will close at the office of the Canterbury Jockey Club at eight o'clock to-night. sj: ijc jjr 4c Acceptances for the first day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting will close on Monday night. * # * * The Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase, England’s great crosscountry event, will be decided to-day. & $t :J: Gay Sonnet came through her racing at Oamaru very well. Her ownertrainer is not likely to give the Gay Lad mare much work prior to the South Canterbury meeting, as she is liable to break down at any time, t)ut •he is so well that she may show up well next week. * * * * Solgele looks none the worse for his racing at Oamaru, and he may be seen again at the South Cantrbury meeting next week. * # * * The two-year-old, Night Recital, by Nightraid from Elocution, the dam of Gay Sonnet, was given his first race at the Oamaru meeting. Unfortunate--13-, he drew the inside position at the barrier, and he was chopped out at the start, so that he did not get any education from the race. He did well on the trip and he will have another race at South Canterbury next week. He is a promising youngster, who may win before the season closes. The Southland sprinter, Rin Tin Tin, is engaged at Riverton at Easter, but it is undrstood that he will be at Riccarton to contest the Great Easter Handicap. He is due to race at the South Canterbury meeting next week, alter which he may join his two-year-old sister, Charmaine, in E. J. Ellis’s stable at Washdyke, until after the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. * * * Rapier failed to race up to expectations in the Awapuni Gold Cup, and it looks as if this good horse has seen his best day. * Paquito was unable to fulfil any of his engagements at the Manawatu meeting this week, and it is possible that he will have to be spelled. % Ht :js Owing to illness the Auckland jockey, If. Dulieu, was unable to fulfil his riding engagements at the Manawatu meeting this week. He has been confined to his bed, but he expects to be about again in the course of a few days.

Maunga is reported to be in steadywork at Hastings with a view to winter racing. Maunga wound up with a win at ten-years-old when he led the field home in the July Steeplechase at Trentham. While contesting the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase at Riccarton last August Maunga fell and he has not raced in the interval. * * * * While galloping on the track at Avondale, early this week, Partial Eclipse broke a leg and had to be destroyed. Partial Eclipse was a five-year-old mare by Nassau from Sibford, and was owned and trained by S. G. Lindsay. She won several races in hack company and was very smart over short courses, although the best was probably not seen of her owing to an injury to a hind leg and unsoundness affecting her at different stages of her career. _ * * * * Bold and Bad (by Swynford—Good and Gay), who was voted one of the highest-bred horses imported to Australia, has yet to prove his worth as a sire, but though it is quite too early to sum up his probable worth as a sire, he only realised 525 guineas when submitted to auction in Melbourne recently. Bold and Bad does not bear a name that would assist him to break down any prejudice that might arise about him. * * Jjc * There was not much money in the market at the Melbourne yearling sales this month, and some well-bred youngsters made very small prices, the bulk of them failing to reach three figures. * * * * The late Mr John Brown, the coal king of Australia, collected one of the biggest studs in the history of breeding. The list numbered 250 mares and seven stallions. In one paddock a recent visitor saw 1000 horses running out to grass. * * * * The Martian mare Battle Scene with a Crowdennis filly at foot and service to Ornamentation, sold at 375 guineas when offered with the Noorilim stud. Battle Scene won the Great Easter of 1923. * * * * The crack Sydney jockey, J. E. Pike, has established a unique record in connection with the C. M. Lloyd Stakes, the mile weight-for-age event, at the Victoria Racing Club’s autumn meeting. It was not until 1924 that he rode a winner in this event. lie scored on The Hawk that season, and he won on the same horse a season later. His next victory was on Gothic in 1928, last year he dead-heated for first place or. the same horse, and this year he won on Amounis. Each of Pike’s horses in the race was an odds on favourite.

The Spearmint horse Spearhead, who realised 1500 guineas when sold with the rest of the Noorilim stud, was bought by a small syndicate of New South Wales breeders. # * j* Only for being tied down to instructions, Bob Lewis, the rider of Phar Lap, might have landed his mount a winner in the Melbourne Cup last spring—but that, of course, is problematical. Lewis’s instructions were not to make the pace, no matter how slow the race was run in the early stages. “ Supposing they walk?” inquired Lewis. “You walk, too,” was the reply. So the veteran rider, in an endeavour to obey orders,, had to fight with Phar Lap to prevent his taking the lead, and so he was beaten into third place by Nightmarch and Paquito. However, the crack three-year-old and his Melbourne Cup conqueror (Nightmarch) will most likely meet in the Cumberland Plate, one mile and three-quarters, and the A.J.C. Plate, two miles and a quarter, at Easter, and then (sa\'s an exchange) he will have a better idea as to whether he should have won the Melbourne Cup, making allowance for the marked improvement of a three-year-old between the spring and the autumn. £ si is m s mu m ® m ® ® in u m in in in m n

Nominations for the trotting events at the Hororata Racing Club’s meeting will close at eight o’clock to-night, at the office of the Canterbury Jockey Club. * * * * The Inter-City Service has arranged to run a motor bus from Christchurch to Cheviot to morrow, in connection with the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting. In the mile and a half saddle race for trotters at Cheviot, Element is on the limit. She is an aged mare by Petereta from Muricata, the dam of Taraire, Ahuriri and Katute. According to the Stud Book, Muricata has had the following progeny:—Taraire, by Four Chimes; Heketara, by Petereta; Ahuriri, by Cathedral Chimes; chestnut filly, by Petereta; Katute, by Nelson Bingen; and a roan filly and colt by Matchlight, Golden Bond, who is engaged in the Trial Handicap at Cheviot, is a three-year-old filly by Worthy Bond from a mare by Petereta, and is trained by M. B. Edwards at Yaldhurst. 5{S Jfc * Jfc The race book for the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting shows the positions of each horse at the barrier. This is an innovation which will be greatly appreciated by' the patrons of the club, and it should be adopted by all clubs. The drawing for positions is usuallydone immediately prior to the race, and drivers and riders are then notified. Rule 287 reads:—“ The horses shall as far as practicable be drawn up before the start according to their handicaps, and horses on the same mark shall be drawn up in an order to be determined by lots to be drawn by the stipendiary steward or a steward of the club before the time appointed for weighing out.” * * * * Several two-y'ear-olds are engaged at the Cheviot meeting. They include Olson, by* Sonoma Harvester from Olive Huon, trained by D. Withers; Gold-worthy, by Guy Parrish from Amie Amelia, trained by J. M’Donald; also Checkers, by* Worthy Bond from Fancy' Pointer; Colorado, by Wrack from Osier Beauty, and Romanos, by Peter Chenault from a Wildwood Junr. mare, all trained by R. B. Berry. * Jfc * sje The trotter Peter M’Millan is giving away 132yds in the Domett Handicap, run over a mile and a half. Peter M’Millan was foaled in 1914, and as a racing trotter he showed a great deal of promise. Later he went wrong in the wind and although he has won races in medium company, he is badlytroubled by the distance of races. He is a good saddle horse. * * * * Pronto Bingen, who is engaged in the Spotswood Handicap, is a four-y r ear-old gelding by Pedro Pronto from a Nelson Bingen mare. There are few of Pedro Pronto’s stock in the Dominion, as the little stallion, who was a brilliant track performer, did a very light stud season before returning to Australia. * * * $ J. Dey'ell is working both his trotters, Nelson’s Prince and Nelson Ata. The pair look in good shape, and they will be racing at early meetings. at * * *■• W. J. Tomkinson is keeping the exSouthlander, Wilma Dillon, in steadywork. Wilma Dillon is a free, easygoing pacer, who, in the meantime, i 6 best over short courses. * * * * The pacer Dundas Boy is still enjoying a spell. Dundas Boy showed a lot of improvement at the end of last season, and early' this season. He was sold recently, and is now under the charge of C. S. Donald. * * * * The Happy Voyage pacer, Regai Voyage, is in good form at present, and is pacing along very satisfactorily in her w’ork under D. Withers’s charge. She is a useful performer, who seems likely to improve. Last Pointer has not raced well of late. During the week he was -worked at Addington with D. Withers’s team. He was in saddle, but failed to get through his task without mixing his gait. * A $ * The pacer Great Epsom has been sold and is now in Nelson Price’s stable. The pacer High Jinks is now* owned on the West Coast. He was started at the recent meeting of the Nelson Trotting Club, held at Greymouth, but he raced a long w*ay below his best form. s>; * * :-i Roj-al Comrade, when last put into work, early in the season, came on very fast, and showed capital form. Later he seemed to train off, and did not behave himself at the barrier. He is doing plenty of useful training work, but does not appear to be as well as he was a few* months ago.

Thorpie, who is now being raced over short courses, is bowling along in good style in his training work. Thorpie is a useful pacer over all distances. # st a i * Brentlight was raced last week at Wellington. For once the small pacer made a bad beginning, but after settling down, he met with trouble at the end of three furlongs, and fell, giving his driver, V. Alborn, a shaking. * * * * Laplander is doing a lot of useful work at headquarters, under F. G. Holmes’s charge. The Harold Dillon pacer looks in fine form. He won the mile harness event on the second day of the Otahuhu Trotting Club’s meet, ing at the end of last month. * * * * ' The trotter Mount Royal has improv ed considerably of late in speed, but unfortunately a journey of two miles is beyond his powers, and he stops \-ery quickly. His owner-trainer, J. J, Wright, is one of the veterans in the sport, and a win with Mount Royal would be well received. *• * * * R. J. Marshall has been working Fair Exchange, who is by Matchlight from a Great Audubon mare, at the pacing gait, but recently he tried him as a trotter, and he shows such promise that he is likely to be raced without hopples in the future. THAMES CLUB HOLDS TROTTING TO-MORROW. PARRISH BELLE AND INVERNESS STAND OUT. (By OBSERVER.) The Thames Trotting Club holds its annual meeting to-morrow. Large fields are the order of the day, and it appears as though this club will again have a successful meeting. There is nothing of outstanding class catered for, but the public will be very interested in the performance of Parrish Belle, the brilliant young trotter in C. G. Lee’s Auckland stable. A win for her would invest the Forbury trotting classic with particular interest if she and White Satin contest the event for three-year-old honours. Inverness Should Win. The first event on the programme is the Hikutaia Handicap, a 3.41 class mile and a half. Twenty-five horses have been accepted for, and no fewer than nineteen are handicapped on the limit. None of these have any special form to recommend them, but there is always a chance of a useful maiden being included in such a bunch as this, and with the possibility of a scrambling start there is the opportunity for something smart to get a useful break on the remainder. On 12yds is the very promising Inverness, winner of a mile and a half event at Manawatu in 3.40. Going on to Hawke’s Bay, he was third from 48yds behind to Rangihau (36yds) and Highland Derby (scr), the former establishing the very smart time of 3.29 3-5. As Inverness was driven an over-confident race and taken to the front at a very early stage, he did well to be within three lengths of the winner. On this performance, it is hard to select anything to beat him. Gaza (12yds) and Lady Yvonne (24yds) may also take part in the distribution of the prize-money.

Dealer’s Chance. In the Kerepeehi Handicap (4.49 class, two miles), Some Dillon appears to be the pick of those on the limit. He has already had two wins, and although his best time is 3.35 2-5 for a mile and a half, he looks as though he will show considerable improvement on that. Paradigm, on his 4.41 3-5 in the Suburban trot at Otahuhu, looks more than a possibility, but even against trotters he has not proved really reliable, so the faster beginning pacers may have hfm scratching from the word “ go.” There is no doubt about his speed, but it is questionable whether he will go trulv all the way. Dealer, on 48yds, showed his ability to get to the end of the two mile journey when he won at Te Aroha in 4.46 1-5 on a track which was by no means fast. Pie was then on a 4.47 mark, and as he won rather easily by three lengths, he should have a very good chance, here from 4.45. Nella Dillon, on 96yds, has been set a hard task, but there is no doubt about her quality. She has been rather unlucky in her races, and at the last Otahuhu meeting she registered two second placings, her times being 2.49 2-5 for a mile and a quarter, and 3.23 2-5 for a mile and a half. Dealer appears to have a reasonable chance, but he is just an ordinary sort on his showings to date, so young improving horses such as Nella Dillon and Some Dillon may prove troublesome for him. The Trotters. A very rough field of seventeen trotters is booked for the Parawai Handicap, a 3.50 class mile and a half. Nebraska, on scratch, ran a good fourth in much better company at Otahuhu, and if he goes as well to-morrow it is difficult to see anything to beat him Lord Roberts (60vds) should also have his chance to get amongst the money. The Saddle Sprint. The saddle horses are catered for in the Puriri Handicap, an event decided over a mile course, the class being 2.23. Student Prince is a speedy customer on scratch, and has already demonstrated ability to go fast in saddle. Roland and Gaza are a pair that may be expected to show improvement, and Nathaniel has been showing up in his work, although threatened in the legs. Realty, on 12yds, ran second in each of the saddle events at South Wairarapa. He is a five-year-old by Real Guy—Lady Moreland, and in three starts has notched a win and two seconds, his best time being 2.21. Childe Audubon, on 36yds, ran well at Te Aroha, dead-heating for first at a mile and a half, and running third in a mile harness event. Realty, Student Prince, and Childe Audubon may do best.

The Thames Cup. The chief item of the day is the Thames Trotting Cup, a two-mile event with a limit of 4.40. Richore is on scratch, and he may be expected to make a better showing than ii his most recent engagements. Of the 12yds lot. Peter Pirate appeals *i._-st, and on Te Aroha running, where he was a good second to Brutus, he shot Id have a good chance. Limosa reads best of the lot on 24yds, and Te Wahia and Warplane should make their presence felt from 36yds. The former has showing good form in saddle sprints, and looks like going a good race over a journey. Stoney, on 48yds, appears to have a good chance of getting on the winning list. He has been showing improvement, and on the final day of the recent Otahuhu meeting he was third to Reremai and Florent in a very fast run race, his time being 4min 31 l-ssec. Time is not everything, of course, but he was very close up, and defeated some fair performers in this class. Explosion, on the same mark, is due to get some money again. He was second to Warspite at Otahuhu, and he should go well to-morrow. Hal Chimes, on the same mark, is another that is liable to be found contesting the final issue.

J. Shaw’s representatives, Stoney and Warplane, should be well supported,

the former appearing a distinct possibility. Peter Pirate and Explosion should also be prominent. My Thorpe Engaged. The field for the Turua Handicap (3.36 class, one mile and a half) contains a good number which have earlier engagements, and the previous running may disclose some unsuspected talent. Some Dillon, on 12yds, must have a reasonable chance if he is not successful earlier. It will be remembered that he won by twenty lengths at Soitth Wairarapa, going 3min 35 2-ssec, and at Te Aroha he won somewhat easily again. Since then he has failed twice -but was giving away some seconds to come into much better company than this. My Thorpe has been off the scene for some time, and now is out again and on 24yds behind in this event. In the early part of the season he showed promise and registered 3.31 in second place at the Auckland spring meeting. On his best form he would be hard to beat. Nathaniel, on scratch, may also get into the picture. Parrish Belle. The President’s Handicap, a 159 class two-miles event for the trotters, will attract great attention because of the fact that the brilliant three-year-old Parrish Belle is engaged, and on the limit. A two-mile race against older and well seasoned opponents is a big task for a youngster, but it must be remembered that this filly has won at each of her three starts, her last effort being over two miles, which she trotted in 4min 58 l-ssec. It is quite certain that there is nothing else in the race so consistent, and the brilliant youngster may add further to her record. Paradigm is on the other end of the handicap, and, though giving away 144 yards, is so much better class than the others that he should have something to say at the finish. Lord Haldane has not been on his best behaviour in his recent efforts, but if he elects to jump out smartly and go truly he should certainly be in the money.

Over-crowded. No less than twenty-seven acceptors remain in the Kopu Handicap, which is a 2.54 class mile and a quarter, and the chief sprint event of the day. Many of those engaged have earlier interests, so there may be several missing when the starter lines them up. However, it seems certain that there will be a large field, and this may give the limit division a chance, as some of the better ones at the back will have a lot of extra ground to cover. Dawdler, First Flight and Pavlova are a trio that may be fancied, and Hohoro is another possibility on scratch. This event should suit Richore, on 12yds, and Benefice, on 24yds, won a mile and a half in 3min 34 3-ssec on the final day at Otahuhu, and later in the day was

third over ten furlongs, her time being 2min 49 3-ssec. The promising Nella Dillon, on 36yds, may also be found amongst those prominent at the finish. First Flight, Benefice and Richore may get most of the money. The following is the programme:— 11.45 a.m. HIKUTAIA HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. Class Smin 41sec. One mile and a half.
