WOOLSTON NOTES.

SURPRISE PARTY. On Saturday evening a party of about twenty-five persons paid a surprise visit to the home of Mr and Mrs R. Patrick, of Radley Street. A very pleasant time was spent in singing, dancing and games. Songs by Mr R. Miller were greatly appreciated. Prizes were won by R. Miller, Miss M’Carthy, Mrs Ashcroft and W. Cooper. A flower competition was won by Miss N. Storey and Mr Jackson, while Betty Leonard and Rodger Ashcroft were presented with consolation prizes. The singing of “ Auld Lang Syne ’* at midnight brought a very pleasant evening to a close. , PERSONAL. Mr C. Lilburne was a visitor to Woolston on Tuesday. He is still an inmate of the Christchcrch Hospital. Mr T. Harris, of Radley Street, is also in the hospital, where he is being treated for an injury to his leg. Mr and Mrs E. Healey, of Richardson Terrace, are spending a holiday at Dunedin and Invercargill. Mr Healey took part in the Redpath Bowling Shield, held in Dunedin on Friday last. Mrs H. Curson, of Sylvester Street, with her two younger children, left for Invercargill on Wednesday for an indefinite period. The St John’s Scouts will be the losers of a member of the committee and one good Scout. WOOLSTON SCHOOL. Good headway is being made with the additions to the Woolston School. The building will consist of two extra class rooms with a cloak room in between. The rooms are being built on the open air principle, while in the cloak room provision is made for heating the building by hot water pipes. The building should be ready for occupation in about six weeks’ time. Recently two scholars of the Woolston School received second class certificates for the Anzac essay, while six others received first and second certificates for the Navy League essays. ST JOHN'S VESTRY. A meeting of the St John’s vestry was held on Wednesday evening in the Parish Room. The Rev Tooley presided. There were also present Messrs Champion and Douglas, wardens, and Messrs Bradley, Dryden, Cooper, Purchase, V. Beaumont and Hyde. Mr Douglas reported on the financial position, w'hich was slightly better than last year. BIBLE CLASSES. The Bible teaching classes in the Woolston School will recommence next Wednesday. The arrangements this year are in the hands of the Rev Lawrence. ST JOHN’S MOTHERS’ UNION. The annual meeting of the St John’s Mothers’ Union v r as held in the Parish Hall on Thursday afternoon. The Rev F. Tooley presided. There v r as a record attendance of members. Mrs F. Tooley was re-elected jiresident.
