Plunket Shield Match Begun At Wellington.

AUCKLAND MAKE POOR BEGINNING; MILLS IS DISMISSED FOR “ DUCK.” Per Press Association. ' WELLINGTON, March 7. THE final Plunket Shield match of the season commenced between Auckland and Wellington on the Basin Reserve to-day, in fine, sunny weather.

Auckland won the toss and Mills and Anthony went into bat on what appeared to be a good wicket. M’Ginopened the Wellington bowling from the southern end and off his fifth ball clean bowled Mills before a run had been scored. Weir was next and he and Anthony took the score to 8. Anthony, who was facing Massey, then cocked one to Cameron, who was fielding close in at square leg. Batsmen Cautious. After this rather disastrous start for Auckland the batsmen watched the bowling carefully and for a time runs came slowly. Gillespie was applauded lor a nice drive to the fence off Henderson and the rate of scoring improved . At 42 M’Leod came on in place of Henderson and his first oyer was a maiden. Gillespie was batting nicely and soon passed Weir. Fifty went up is as many minutes.

The scoring again slowed down when Gallichan, the slow left-hander, came on at the northern end. With the fourth ball of his third over he got Gillespie when the batsman went to hook one to leg. 54—3—26.

Wensley Hits Out. The newcomer was Wensley, who soon settled down. lie showed a partialit}’ for the leg side, and quickly ran to double figures. With the total at 93, Wensley, who was laying on the wood, drove one from Gallichan into Lowry’s hands at mid off and it was held. Weir, who had been batting quietly and steadily’, was at this stage 31. Gallichan had now taken two for 26. Allcott followed and opened his account with four off Gallichan. This and a boundary by Weir brought 100 up in 100 minutes. Weir continued to bat steadily, and reached 40, with the total at 110. At the luncheon adjournment the score was 122 for four.
