PERSONAL.
MINISTERIAL. The Hon W. B. Taverner, Minister of Railways, passed through Christchurch last evening on his way from Dunedin to Wellington. He will return to Dunedin at the end of this week to represent the Government at the opening of the new Town Hall in the southern city. The Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, Minister of Health, and the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, Minister of Internal Affairs, arrived in Christchurch from the north this morning. Sir Francis Boys and the Hon. G. Witty, M.L.C., were passengers from Wellington this morning. Professor Denham arrived from the north this morning. Mr R. B. Williams was a passenger from the north this morning. Sir Emmanuel, and Lady Hoyle, of Huddersfield, England, are staying at Warner’s Hotel. Messrs H. Hatch, M. Ogilvy, Spencer and A. W. Howly, of Wellington, are recent arrivals at Warner’s Hotel. Mr Frank H. Ashton, news editor of the Sydney “Sun,” accompanied by Mrs Ashton, is visiting New Zealand on a three weeks’ holiday trip. Mr J. Okerbloom, of International Harvesters, Ltd., arrived at Auckland by the Niagara on a holiday and business trip. Mr D. Rodie, commercial manager of the New Zealand Railways, was in Christchurch yesterday. He left for Wellington last night. Mr R. H. Gordon, a director of Associated Newspapers, Sydney, accompanied by Mrs and Miss A. Gordon, arrived by the Niagara for a tour of the Dominion. Mr A. Yaffa, proprietor of the “Newspaper News,” Sydney, arrived by the Niagara to attend the annual meeting of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association, at Mount Cook. Mr IT. B. Phipps, vice-president of Chrysler Motors, Ltd., returned by the Niagara from a visit to Australia, to tour New Zealand before leaving for overseas. Mr R. B. Teakle, General Manager of the Canadian National Steamships, and also representing Canadian National Railways, is at present in New Zealand, and will arrive in Christchurch to-morrow. The Rev. J. Robertson, of the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church, will leave by the Marama for Sydney on February 28. He is going to take charge of the Petersham Baptist Church in that city.
Mr Frank Goldberg, managing director of the Goldberg Advertising Agency, Limited, arrived at Auckland by the Niagara en route to Mount Cook to attend the conference of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association. Colonel N. P. Adams and Mrs Adams, of Wharekawa, returned on the Niagara from a twelve months’ tour of Great Britain and the Continent. Colonel Adams was in command of the Featherston training camp during the war. Messrs D. E. Hutton, B. J. Ager and W. Robertson left Christchurch for Wellington last evening, to attend the annual meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, to which they are delegates.
Motions of condolence with Mr F. J. Good, in the death of his mother, and with the relatives of the late Messrs John Stewart, of the Edge ware Club, and J. Preece, of the Shirley Club, were passed at last night’s meeting of the Christchurch Bowling Centre.' Messrs G. V. Adams, W. G. Bearman, L. H. Wood, B. Power, A. H. Ivory, J. H. Turner, C. W. S. Bearman, C. Moore, C. S. Green, C. L. Clabburn, J. Quinn (Wellington) and G. H. Abel (Auckland), are stajdng at. the United Service Hotel.
At last night’s meeting of the Christchurch Bowling Centre it was decided to send a letter of congratulation to Mr P. Vance, of the Sumner Bowling Club, on his success in getting to the position of runner-up in the singles championship at the recent Dominion tournament at Dunedin.
Dr Jackson Crawshaw has just returned from England after an absence of twenty months. Dr Crawshaw has been engaged in post-graduate work in London and Edinburgh, and has been studying chiefly children’s diseases. He was senior medical officer at East London Hospital for eight months. At last night’s meeting of the Sumner Borough Council the Mayor, Mr W. H. Nicholson, referred to the recovery of Mr J. M’Combs, M.P., from his recent serious illness. He expressed the council’s pleasure at his improvement, and the Town Clerk was instructed to write to Mr M’Combs expressing the council’s appreciation of the services he had rendered in the past, and its wish that he would soon be fully recovered from the effects of his indisposition.
