STATION PLATFORM QUITE INADEQUATE.
MAYOR’S VIEWS ON THE PROPOSAL TO WIDEN IT.
The suggestion that the main platform at the Christchurch Railway Station should be widened by taking in the space occupied by one of the tracks, was brought under the notice of the Mayor (the Rev J. K. Archer) to-day. When asked what he thought of the suggestion, the Mayor said that he was a little bit afraid to suggest any improvement to the existing station in case it should be used as an excuse for delaying the erection of a new station. “On the other hand,” he added, “it is indisputable that it would be an im-
mense gain if there were more platform space, because at times the present platform is absolutely inadequate for the number of people using it.” • The width of the present platform Is approximately 20ft, and by taking in the space occupied by one of the railway tracks, it would be increased to 31ft.
