REJECTED FRUIT STILL UNCLAIMED ON WHARF.
(Special to the “Star.” AUCKLAND, February 11, The four hundred cases of Norfolk Island bananas that arrived by the Maui Pomare last week and were rejected by the merchants to whom they were consigned have not yet been moved from the King’s wharf, Auckland. The Harbour Board ordered the consignees or agents for the vessel to remove the fruit, but both parties disclaimed any liability. Dr Hughes, medical officer, stated that although the bananas were not yet in a state of putrefaction, they were decomposed, fruit flies being attracted and if the cargo were not shortly removed the Department would ; take action. The bananas will probably be removed to-day by the Harbour Board, which would debit the cost to w’hich ever party might be established in later proceedings as responsible for removing them.
