FIRST BRITISH TALKIE FOR CIVIC THEATRE.
The first British, talking picture to appear in New Zealand will make its debut at the Civic Theatre next Friday. Called “ High Treason,” the title of the story is by no means suggestive of the film. Produced by the Gaumont British Company, it carries with it po stamped hallmark of guaranteed success. Having for its principal players Benita. Hume and Jameson Thomas, it is not presented with a garnishment of established stardorii; nevertheless, it is so permeated with original ‘ features and characterised by such a wealth of dramatic incident that it cannot fail to satisfy local audiences. A private exhibition of this film -was given the other morning. Its theme had not been noised abroad, and little was known of the production. The first few scenes, however, convinced that this was something new, and as the great spectacle, unfolded the full reality of the thing overwhelmed the audience. The powder of the new art of the talking screen has been felt in its entirety for the first time.
