FINE RACING SEEN AT WELLINGTON REGATTA.

STAR CREW STRIKES ROCK, DAMAGING BOAT.

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, February 9. Though glorious sunshine graced the proceedings throughout the day, weather conditions could hardly have been considered perfect for the Wellington Regatta Club’s annual rowing regatta, which was held on the Koro Koro course (Petone) on Saturday afternoon. 4 On account of the. fresh northerly breeze which sprang up in the day, the regatta was transferred from the city course The oarsmen were mostly troubled by the wind rather than the state of the water, and it proved disastrous for Star in the senior pairs, when Cooke and Mullins, with the race practically in their hands, through being blown too close inshore were unfortunate enough to strike a submerged rock. A brand-new boat by Norton was damaged. It had only seen its first race at Christchurch on the previous Saturday. The three contestants in the senior singles sculls narrowly escaped a. similar disaster earlier in the day. All watching the race were on tenterhooks to see the wary oarsmen dodging through a veritable labyrinth of rocks and emerging safely. They were saved only by the high tide. Additional interest was given the occasion by the presence of three champion crews in the senior single sculls, tfle senior fours and the senior pairs. In the first-mentioned event the presept amateur champion of New Zealand, W. Turner (Tauranga), after leading all the way, was beaten on the line by two lengths by A. K. G. Ja-ckson (Union, Wanganui), the previous year’s champion. , _ The crack Hamilton crew had a runaway victory in the senior fours, winning a superb race by a good ten lengths. ... An exciting contest in the senior pairs event was brought to an untimely end when the Star crew struck a rock. Results: —
