STRANGE VERDICT AT BIG FORGERY TRIAL.
DEFENDANTS WERE NOT OUT TO AID THEMSELVES. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) BERLIN, February 9. There has been a surprising end to the Karunidze trial, the three defendants being acquitted. The Court ordered that the proceedings against the remainder be abandoned. It was declared that the defendants were actuated by unselfish political motives and were entitled to the amnesty granted to political prisoners on the occasion of Marshal von Hindenburg’s eightieth birthday. The Public Prolocutor is asking for a re-trial. » The newspapers express amazement. They contemplate that conclusions may be easily drawn from the verdict. They ask whether political elements in Germany are at liberty to counterfeit currency for the purpose of overturning the Government. Professor Karunidze was charged with forging foreign notes to stimulate a revolt in Georgia and depreciate the Soviet’s currency.
