CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) ALLEGED THEFT. Sydney George Hall (Mr Burns), who was charged with the theft on February 3, of a bicy(fle valued at £l3 19s, the property of Elizabeth M’Kenzie, was remanded till Thursday, February 13. TRAFFIC CASES. On a charge of overloading his lorry, George Maximillian Hare was fined 20s and costs. On the charge of not having an unladen weight plate affixed to his lorry, he was convicted and discharged. OVERLOADING MOTOR-CYCLE. For overloading a motor-cycle, Ronald Wilkin was fined 5s and costs. DANGEROUS SPEED. Royce B. Soanes and Lawrence E. Smith were charged with riding their, motor-cycles along Bealey Avenue at a dangerous speed. Each defendant was fined 20s and costs. ACTION FAILS. In a case in which the Inspector of Awards (Mr R. T. Bailey) proceeded against the Ashburton Transport ComW. J. Hunter) on a charge of failing to comply with the preference clause in the Drivers’ Award, the Magistrate (Mr H. A. Young, SM ) gave judgment for defendants. In giving judgment, Mr Young said that Mr Cullen, one of the partners in the company, apparently had acted in good faith. The union had sent down the unionist Johnston to replace Donaldson, who was not a member of the union. Mr Cullen was satisfied that Donaldson was the better man for the work, and also that Johnston had shown no enthusiasm in seeking the position. On charges of failing to pay tw'o men the award rates of wages the company was fined £1 on each charge. For the defence it was stated that the additional amounts of wages had been paid to the Inspector of Awards’ office. In one case the company had paid above the award rates. (Before Mr H. P. Lawry. S.M.) MAINTENANCE CASES. Percy Colli nson Wilson was convicted and sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment for disobedience of a maintenance order, the warrant to be suspended provided 5s a week is paid off arrears, in addition to current maintenance. Gerald Richard Piggott Allpress was convicted and sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment for disobedience of a maintenance order, the warrant to be suspended on payment of 5s a week off the arrears, in addition to the current order. William Caleb Smith was ordered to pay 15s a week towards the maintenance of a destitute relative.
