FISHING IMPROVES IN CANTERBURY RIVERS.

The week-end fishing in the North Canterbury rivers was perhaps the best it has been this season. In the north branch of the Waimakariri the fish were rising well to the black gnat, and several bags of a dozen or so trout were taken on Saturday and Sunday. The fish in the Cam and Main Drain were also rising well to the dry fly. The Selwyn has been fishing fairly well for the past few days. Some fine baskets having been taken above the Upper Huts and near Coe’s Ford on the fly. The Coachman and Red Tip Governor are taking well in the upper reaches, while near the mouth the bully and feather lure are being used with success.

* In the South Canterbury rivers fine sport is being obtained with the fly, and some really good fish have been landed whenever the water was clear enough for the fly fisherman. The Avon is now yielding some good baskets of small fish to the fly fisherman, and several rainbow trout were taken last week below the mill. Up in the tributaries, the Wairarapa and the Waimairi, the trout are rising well to the Black Gnat and the Blue Dunn. In the snow rivers the “pilot fish” or advance guard of the salmon are running well, and the first one to be taken on the rod was landed last week at Cass, which shows that the fish are already well up the rivers. The Waimakariri is still too dirty to fish for the salpion yet, but as soon as it clears anglers who' prefer the big fighting fish should obtain some good sport.
