The improvements which have been made to the road over the hills from the Hundalee to the Oaro, on the way to Kaikoura, have effected a striking change in what was once regarded as a dangerous route. Grades have been eased and corners reduced and widened, with so much success that the road need present no terrors to the average motorist. There is no grade which cannot be negotiated easily in second gear, while on the down slopes top gear is perfectly safe with the wellbraked car. The road at present is in excellent order, with the exception of a few short sections where repair work is proceeding. Some sharp corners are being cut out by the construction of deviations, and when this work has been completed the road should be an ideal one. For its scenic beauty it should attract many visitors who, no doubt, will add the trip along the beautiful coast road to Kaikoura as a fitting wind-up to the run through the hills.
