BIG NAVAL CUTS ARE GIVEN EXPLANATION.
CURTAILMENT NOT ONE-SIDED, IS VIEW
(Received February 3, 12.25 p.m.) LONDON, February 2. The “ Daily Herald,” in justifying the latest naval cuts, says that foreign delegates at the conference fully realise the significance of the Government’s revision of the naval programme. The cuts entail a total saving of £9,000,000. They are of two kinds: First, the cancellation of the cruisers Surrey and Northumberland, the preliminary work on which is being scrapped; and secondly, the reduction of the 1929 programme before any work is begun or orders placed.
“ This is not one-sided disarmament,” says the “ Daily Herald.” “Itis a measure of the Government’s confidence as to the outcome of the conference. If the conference succeeds, the vessels which have been dropped will not be required. The Government has, therefore, decided not to begin a work which might have to be scrapped later. The change will not entail the discharge of Government dockyard employees.”
