POISONING DUE TO CARELESSNESS.
EIGHT PERSONS AFFECTED IN TINWALD DISTRICT.
Fresh tongues which became contaminated after they were purchased were the cause of eight persons suffering the effects of poisoning in the Tinwald district. Six members of one family and two neighbours were affected, but they all made a rapid recovery. Colonel F. W. W. Dawson, assistant medical officer of health for the Canterbury district, stated to-day that the circumstances of the case were investigated by the Ashburton County health inspector (Mr Johnson). His investigations showed that at the time of purchase the tongues were in quite a fit condition for consumption, but they became contaminated as a result of carelessness on the part of the purchaser.
Although the attack was severe in one or two cases, none of those affected suffered acutely.
