MINISTERIAL. The Hon W. B. Taverner, Minister for Railways, arrived in Christchurch by the ferry steamer yesterday morning. He paid a visit to Akaroa during the day, and left by last night’s express for Dunedin. Within the next few days he will return to North Canterbury on forestry business. He may pay a visit to Nelson. Mr A. Baer is a guest at Warner’s Hotel. Mr S. R. Oakley (Hawera) is staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr J. M’Nair, district railway engineer, resumed duty this morning after spending a holiday in Dunedin. Messrs W. R. M’Laren and R. J. M’Laren (Timaru) are guests at the Clarendon Hotel. Sir James Mills is expected to arrive in Christchurch from the south tomorrow night. Mr Roy Scotter, of Sydney, is stajring with Dr A. B. Pearson, Hawthorne Street. Mr M. Dennehy, Assistant-General Manager of Railways, is a guest at the Hotel Federal. Mr A. B. Maxwell, who has been on the staff of the Medway School, left on Friday for Marton, where he will continue teaching. Passengers by the ferry steamer yesterday morning included Messrs E. S. Luttrell, D. and C. Crozier, and Captain H. Monro. Mr H. H. Sterling, General Manager of the New Zealand Rail wavs, will pay a visit to the South Island* within the next few days. Mr E. A. Turner, manager of Barclay’s Bank, Port Said, who has been visiting the Dominion, left for Sydney on Friday by the Marama. The Gazette announces the appointment of Mr N. L. Baillie, Rangiora, as deputy registrar of marriages, and deaths. Mr C. E. Foweraker, lecturer in charge of the Canterbury College School of Forestry, and Mr F.'L. Hutchinson, lecturer at the school, returned from the West Coast on^Saturday. Mr E. A. Earp, Chief Apiary Instructor, arrived from the South on Saturday, and after attending the beekeepers’ field day at Tai Tapu, left the same evening for Wellington. M.W. Brother J. J. Clark, Grand Master of the Masonic Grand Lodge of New Zealand, will arrive from Dunedin on Thursday, and will visit one of the city lodges in the evening. Mr A. Jackson, M.A., M.Sc., who has been on the staff of Wellington College for a number of years, has resigned to take up a position at the Timaru Boys’ High School. Lieutenant John Elworthy, R.N., youngest son of Mr and Mrs A. S. Elworthy, has been appointed A.D.C. to the new Governor-General of New Zealand, Lord Bledisloe. Mr P. G. Lewis, head master of the Cambridge District High School, has been appointed an inspector of schools in the Hawke’s Bay district. Mr Lewis left the Dannevirke North School a year ago to take up his position at Cambridge. Priest for fifty years and archdeacon of Taranaki for eighteen years, the Venerable F. G. Evans has taken the title of Archdeacon Emeritus following the institution of Canon G. H. Gavin, vicar of Waitara, as the new archdeacon.
Presentations from fellow-employees were made on Friday to Mr G. A. Read, overseer of the photographic engraving branch of the Government Printing Office, Wellington, who has retired on superannuation. Mr W. A. G. Skinner,. the Government Printer, presented him with a gold watch from the overseers’ association, and a leather suitcase from the photo-litho branch, referring to his excellent service for thirty-six years, and his regret at losing so valued an officer.
