OTAGO AND WELLINGTON PLAY IN PLUNKET SHIELD SERIES.

Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, January 31. The Plunket Shield match Otago v Wellington was commenced at Carisbrook this morning in dull but fine weather. The wicket was easy, improving as the day progressed. The outfield was slow. * Wellington won the toss and batted. Baker and Foley opened, the former taking strike to Dunning. Baker hit the third ball to the leg boundary and was neatly caught the next ball by Knight in slips. 4—l—4. Hollings was the new batsman. Runs came slowly, Dunning and Elmes bowling steadily and giving the batsmen few' opportunities. The fielding was keen. When the total was twenty-five Lemin replaced Dunning. Lemin, who was making his first appearance in Shield cricket, was sending down very accurate balls. Alloo then replaced Elmes. An hour’s play produced forty, Hollings being twenty-six and Foley four. Lemin, having bowled seven overs for eight singles, was relieved by Moloney. Foley was batting doggedly and he reached double figures after seventy minutes. Hollings was more aggres-

sive, but anything above a single was very exceptional. When Foley was 15 he made a weak stroke to an off break from Moloney and dragged it on to his wickets. 61—2—15, Lowry came in. When the total was 72, Dunning replaced Alloo, and Lemin replaced Moloney. Lemin’s first ball was responsible for the fall of Hollings’s wicket. Hollings was at the crease 87 minutes. 76—3—46. Cameron was the next batsman. It was raining lightly, necessitating the use of sawdust. The new combination played carefully and did not brighten the game to any extent, but three fours off Dunning by Cameron brought up 100 in 113 minutes. Then Lowry went out leg before to Lemin. 100—4—17. Scores:— WELLINGTON. First Innings.
