SPORTS GROUNDS ARE ASKED FOR
DEPUTATION WAITS ON RICCARTON COUNCIL. A strong deputation to the Riccarton Borough Council last night requested the council to take the necessary steps to acquire a block of land fronting Matipo Street and extending from George Street to Blenheim Road, for the purposes of a sports and recreation ground. The deputation was organised by the Riccarton Citizens’ Association, and was headed by its president, Mr R. W. B righting. Mr Brighting urged the importance of securing a sufficient area of land in Riccarton for the purposes outlined. This, he said, was the last opportunity that would be presented of securing a block of land suitable for the purpose. The association had inspected the reserve set aside in the Metropolitan Trotting Club subdivision, comprising 41 acres and fronting on Euston Street. That area was not only too small, but was inconveniently situated, being almost on the western boundary of the borough. The association had also inspected the area of land now being discussed. Here from seven to eight acres could be purchased, and in addition the area laid out in streets through the block would be included in the sports area. The club would substitute four acres here for the Euston Street block, and the proposal was that the council should purchase the extra land, so that Riccarton could have a decent park. This deputation was fairly representative, including the Citizens' Association, Rugby Football Union, Wharenui School Committee and representatives from some of the churches. On the motion of Councillor Wise, seconded by Councillor Wood, it was decided that the Mayor and Councillors Wilding and Malcolmson wait upon the club to obtain an offer and all information.
