A machine was in use in Cathedral Square on Saturday which paints white lines on the roadway to indicate crossing places for pedestrians. The absence of perfect straightness in the lines made on Saturday points to the fact that the machine is in the experimental stage as far as Christchurch is concerned. It is of English manufacture, and enables work, which formerly would have taken three or four days to do, to be done in two or three hours. At one stage of operations on Saturday, two women carefully walked along the newly painted lines, and then had a look at the soles of their shoes to see how much paint they had picked up.
