PARROTS ARE NOW ON BANNED LIST.
GOVERNMENT TAKING NO RISK OF DISEASE. (Special to the "Star.”) WELLINGTON, January 20. The reported outbreak of psittacosis (parrot fever) in America and Germany, from which disease there have been apparently one or two deaths in the United States, has led to the New Zealand authorities temporarily prohibiting the importation of parrots into the Dominion. Referring to the matter yesterday, the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon P. A. de la Perrelle) stated that immediately news was received of the outbreak of the mysterious disease, the Director-General of Health was communicated with for his views as to whether it was considered advisable to discontinue granting permission for the importation of parrots into the Dominion. A reply received expressed the opinion that in view of possible risks, the importation of parrots from overseas should be prohibited for the time being. The Department of Agriculture was in agreement with the Health Department in its recommendation, consequently, Mr de la Perrelle stated, it has been decided to prohibit the birds coming into New Zealand. Any parrots, or members of the parrot family, which might happen to be in transit, could be put into quarantine on arrival in the Dominion.
