CARELESS DRIVING.

To the. Editor. Dear Sir,—Your leader on the above subject is without doubt very much to the point. As you say, love of swank and lack of brains are responsible for most of the accidents of to-day. Quite a lot has been said about motorists undergoing a more severe test before a license is issued to drive. To my mind no test of ability to drive will safeguard the public from the menace of.the qualified driver without brains There is only one way to deal with this class once carelessness is proven, and that is to cancel the license, and should such offender attempt to drive without a license, let it be gaol. Any person presenting firearms at another is usually dealt with\by the authorities in no uncertain manner, yet these irre sponsible people are allowed to drive motors which in their hands become dangerous engines of destruction. Let the by-law be administered with out fear or favour. Let every decent motorist undertake to assist the traffic authorities to compel observance of the law, for what may seem paltry offences often result in serious accidents—pass ing standing trams, .cutting corners, non-observance of the rule to give way to the man on the right, speeding over crossings these and many other breaches of the by-law occur every hour of the day. On New Year’s Eve I saw four motor cyclists, each with a lady on behind, doing 40 miles through a borough. One accelerated to about 50 to pass the other, and this in a main thoroughfare, where women and children were cross ing the streets. There was no doubt the boys could ride. That I should say was their full mental equipment, and as for thrills those young girls on be hind must have secured some.—l am etc. R. \v. ROBSON. Riccarton.
