By Special Correspondent of the ** Star.**

REVIEW OF 1929.

Spreydon.—The local Burgesses Association whose duty it is to keep a watchful eye on local requirements have had many meetings and through their action improvements have been effected throughout the district. After several applications and deputations to the Council a library was started in Spreydon and this was opened on June 13. 1929. The library is located in the old Borough Council Chambers. While it is sufficient for present requirements the time is not far distant when the building will have to be enlarged. The subscribers total 130 and the books on the shelves total about 1400. A public call telephone has been established at the corner of Stourbridge and Lyttelton. Streets and judging by the use it is receiving since installation it is filling a long felt want in this part of Spreydon. The road problem has been a continual controversy at the Burgesses meetings and while the Council cannot put every road in order until all the sewers are connected still it must be recognised that the authorities are doing their best under the circumstances. The only street to be paved during the first year’s programme was Lincoln Road from Barrington Street to Wright’s Road and authority has been sought to pave the whole length of Barrington Street during the second year and Milton and Somerfield Streets during the third and fourth years respectively. Through the efforts of the Association Smarts Pond has been transformed from a dirty insect-breeding place to a reserve which has been filled in and levelled off for a children’s playground. Congratulations are extended to the Somerfield School cricket team on winning the Christchurch Primary School’s Cricket Competition. A dental clinic is being established in the school for treating children from the surrounding schools. Nairn's Nursery, Lincoln Road, celebrated its jubilee early this } The Sports Clubs have entered in the various competitions during the - ear and have met with fair success. Addington.—The district’s requirements have been taken care of the local Burgesses Association. The weekly socials held by the Association during the last few months of 1929 were a great success both financially and socially Extensive alterations and ad ciitions have been effected to the Addington library which will enable the ( ommittee to give greater facilities to its continually increasing membership.

The remarks relative to the roads in Spreydon apply equally well to the district. Streets on the second year’s programme which will probably be paved during the coming year include Lincoln Road from Moorhouse Avenue to Barrington Street. The Addington Rugby League senior team is to be congratulated on winning the Thacker shield, and McKeon and Vivian Cups in the Senior League Competition. A sensation of a mild nature was caused when an attempt was made to set fire to St. Mary’s Church. Fortunately the fire was checked before damage of a serious nature was done. A successful King and Queen Carnival was held by the Addington School Committee to raise funds to instal a hot water heating system in the school and to improve the bath. The financial result will enable the committee to carry out the improvements required. The oldestablished Addington Swimming Club was re-organised through the efforts of a few swimming enthusiasts. The several Sports Clubs have had a successful year In conclusion the local members of the different controlling bodies are deserving of thanks for the manner in which they have looked after the affairs of the district during 1929.
