(Special to the “ Star.”) GREYMOUTII, January 3. David Robb and George Rodgers were sent to gaol to-day on charges of being idle and disorderly. They had been employed on relief works at Murchison. but arrived at Greymouth a fortnight ago, and spent their money' on drink, also losing their savings. They r expressed their intention to walk to Canterbury. JAMMED ACCELERATOR. A car, owned and driven by Mr B. E. Older, of Greymouth, was extensively damaged yesterday on the road near Goldsborough, when the accelerator jammed and the vehicle ran off the road and overturned. Mr Older’s injuries were confined to slight cuts and bruises. He was driving alone. The car was damaged about the radiator. The bumper was torn off. and the wind screen and read mudguard broken. The car was a practically new threeseater. GOOD DEPTH OX GREY BAR. The Grey' bar was on its good behaviour during 1929. The average depth for the year was the best recorded during the past decade. The average depth of the bar at high water during 1929 was 24ft Gin, and the average depth of the river was 21ft 6in. The depth on the bar during December was 27ft, a very' good average for the month. This was exceeded only once in 1929, in July, when the average was 27ft Sin. OTIRA-CHRISTCHURCII ROAD. A message from Bealey’ this afternoon stated that the road from Otira to Christchurch is in good order, and that the river and the creeks are fordable; CRICKET. The Canterbury touring team defeated the Inangahua representatives at Reefton yesterday b.v three wickets and 46 runs. Newman gave an attractive display, compiling 57 not out. BOWLING TOURNAMENTThe Grey r mouth Bowling Club hejd a progressive pairs tournament yesterday, Graham (skip) and Shannon (lead) being the respective t winners, each being undefeated during the day'. PERSONAL. Miss Alma Flewellyn is on a holiday visit to Christchurch and Wanganui. Messrs J. Guy and P. Knox leave to-morrow for Wellington. Miss Mary Speed, of Wellington, who has been visiting Greymouth, will leave for her home to-morrow. Mr 11. Spencer, of the Post and Telegraph Office, Reefton, is on annual leave. Mr C. Fraser, who has been on holiday in Greymouth, left this morning for Wellington. c ? Mr S. F. Tomlinson, a member of the staff of Duncan, M’Lean, Ltd., who has retired, was presented by the staff with a Morris chair. The presentation was made by Mr L- D. M’Glashan. The, marriage took place at St John's Church. Westport, on New Year’s morning, of Elsie, only’ daughter of Mr and Mrs J. 11. Pat?, to William Robert, eldest son of Mrs and the late Thomas M’Kenzie. The Rev W. J. Bloyce officiated. The newly married couple left by car for Christchurch en route to Dunedin, where the honeymoon is to be spent. DEATH OF WELL-KNOWN RESIDENT. The. death occurred at Westport, on New Year’s Eve, of Mrs Kisscll. wife of Mr William Kisscll. She was visiting friends, and suddenly dropped dead. Mrs Kissell was born in Nelson, and had resided in Westport for forty' y’ears. She leaves a widower, three sons and seven grandchildren, also five sisters: Mrs Bevan (Westport). Mrs Gemmell. (Nelson), Misses Scott (2) and another sister in Wanganui, and one brother, Mr G. Scott, of Wellington. An inquest was held yesterday, and a verdict of heart failure was returned. DROWNING VICTIM KNOWN ON COAST. Mr John Fitzgerald, who was drowned at Opotiki, was the son of Mr John Fitzgerald, formerly a bridge contractor, well known in Greymouth- The deceased was also a nephew of Mr and Mrs A. Sundbye, of Greymouth. HOKITIKA. (Special to the “Star.”) HOKITIKA, January 3. Taking advantage of the Christmas holiday’ season the local Boy Scouts have been in camp for a week past at Mikonui. The period under canvas had been looked forward to for some time as a party' of Christchurch Scouts from the Linwood Troop, also a party from the Greymouth troop, had arranged to join up so that quite a , large camp was anticipated. It is ,

reported that, despite weather conditions and, perhaps, the temporary discomfort of tents being blown down and gear getting wet, a merry and useful time has been spent. The party will break camp and return today. To-night will be spent in Hokitika, and the visitors will proceed to their respective homes by train to morrowu Advantage will be taken of the special gathering this evening to formally open the new’ scout room of the local troop. SHIPPING. The steamer Gael, laden with timber, sailed for Nelson to-day'. The motor ship Moa is expected on Sunday to load timber for Wellington. She is likely to continue in the Hoki-tika-North Island trade for some time. LORD AND LADY CRAIG AVON. Lord and Lady Craigavon are expected here to-morrow. They will proceed to the Franz Josef Glacier the next day'. TROTTING MEETING. The Westland Trotting Club held a successful meeting to-day. Both the attendance and the totaiisator showed increases. The racing was without special incident, but it proved very enjoyable. The clay track was fast and good times were recorded. The stipendiary steward expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the meeting, which was one of the most successful held by the club. BOY SCOUTS* SPORTS. The Boy Scout camp at the Mikonui River, South Westland, held its sports clay on January 1 under ideal conditions. The camp, which has been a combined one, consisted of the Hokitika troop under Scoutmaster Sutherland, who was also camp chief, the Greymouth troop, and the Linwood troop, under Group Scoutmaster J.
