CONCLUDING DAY AT INVERCARGILL.

CROWD HOSTILE OVER LAST RACE. (Soecial to the “Star.’*) INVERCARGILL, January 3. The Southland Racing summer meeting was brought to a conclusion in threatening weather to-day. a strong wind drying the track. There , was a large attendance. The gate receipts for the meeting yielded an increase. but totalisator investments were down £B2B. Racing was very interesting, with the leading event again going to the Trentham ownertrainer, J. W. Lowe, with the aid of Glare, after one of the best races over a mile and a quarter ever seen on ths course. For the Gladstone Hurdles Maungamoe was first fancy, carrying ninety six chances more than Antrim Boy % with Dubious 455 tickets away, but others were keenly Gayoim Maungamoe and Dubious ran in lint to the straight. Then the first-named dropped back. At the stand fenc* Antrim Boy, Maungamoe and Dubjoii?, were in line. Antrim Boy then tool* charge from Maungamoe. 'the pair were on terms at the back and cross mg the top, but Antrim Bay always gaiqed at the obstacles. Approaching the home turn the field closed up Antrim Boy just led Maungamoe over the last jump, Gayoma moving up fast. In the run home Gavoma got up and beat Antrim Boy by half * length, with Maungamoe a similar distance away third, closely attended by Dubious and Red Heather. Suncross was first fancy for the Roslyn Harness Trot, carrving 756 chances more than Cathedral Spire, with Maybird nineteen tickets off next, but quite a number of starters were solidly followed. At the start Liberal stood and Erin’s Advance, Cathedral Spire and Meteor tangled. Red Murries was the early pacemaker, but Streak led from Erin’s Advance and Black Friar at the stands. The order was the same at the back. Rounding tjie far turn Sunbell, Erin’s Advance Sunshade, Meteor and Black Friar were in close order and Suncross was improving his position rapidly. Turn ing into the home stretch Sunbell. Sunshade and Suncross were in line Tn the run home Suncross lasted long enough to win by a length from Sun- ? h ? f d? - a w ! th Sunbell a length and a half off third, closely followed by Mav bird. Then came Erin’s Advance. An inquiry was held into the alleged crossing of Sunshade by Suncross nearing the winning-post. It was decided to reveres the judge’s decision and place Simshade first and Suncross second. M’Lellan admitted interference beyond his control, and it was decided to accept his explanation and take no further action. This appeared to be a reasonable decision, as Suncross took fright at the crowd and bored into the path of Sunshade. For the Shorts Handicap, Meadow Lark. in order of selection, carrying 170 chances more than Jack a Dandy, with Quantum 57 tickets off in third place, closely followed in favour by Blue Metal. From a good start Francolin dashed to the front three lengths clear of Royal Saxon. Crossing the top Caterpillar ranged up to Francolin, while Jack a Dandy and Medow Lark improved their positions. The field was in close order turning for home, and an exciting finish re. suited in Meadow Lark winning by half

a length from Jack a. Dandy, -with Royal Saxon a similar distance off third, just in front of Blue Metal. Then almost in line came Battle Flag and Caterpillar. Meadow Lark won cleverly, but was doing his best. Caterpillar looked to have a great chance at the distance, but faded out. Royal Saxon was cutting down the leaders over the last fifty yards. Blue Metal ran a good race. Battle Flag came just when too late. The locally trained Abbeville was first in request for the Summer Handicap, carrying 150 chances more than Salmo Salar, with Battle Maid 400 tickets off in third place- Coupling, Dumblane and Flying Binge also commanded attention. At the start Battle Maid was cut out. Insolence led out, but at the end of two furlongs Abbeville had taken charge from Flying Binge, Birdwood. Insolence and Skysign. The order was the same crossing the top, with Salmo Salar improving his position quickly. Abbeville was first into the straight from Flying Binge and Salmo Salar. Below the distance Salmo Salar ran up to the leader, and, going on, won by half a length from the stoutly finishing Dumblane, with Abbeville a length and a half away third, just in front of Takaka Then came Insolence, Vinegrove aqd Skysign. The winner owed his success in a measure to the clever handling of B. Brodie, who kept him out of trouble and made an effective run at the right moment to stall off a stout run by Dumblane, who has been racing in improved form recently. Abbeville failed for speed in the run home. Glare was a warm first selection for the Southland Handicap, carrying 474 chances more than Celerity 11., with Night bad about 400 tickets off in third berth, thirty supporters ahead of Latin Quarter. Circulation and the coupled King Balboa and Queen Balboa also were keenly followed. From a good start Night Lad just headed Latin Quarter, King Balboa and Glare past the mile, up the hill and down the back. At the five furlong mark the field was in. close order. Night Lad just showing out from Latin Quarter, King Balboa, Queen Balboa and Glare, with Camisader and Celerity 11. closing up. As the top was crossed the field bunched, but the leaders were the same. Nearing the home turn Circulation got a run on the rails, while Celerity 11. was knocked back. Latin Quarter headed Night Lad as heads were turned for hcm,e. Circulation came fast on the fence, and Glare moved up at the distance. Glare was disappointed in trying tc get through and Emerson had to pull him out. A great finish resulted in Glare getting up to win by a short half length from Latin Quarter, with Queen Balboa three-quarters of a length off third, just in front of Circulation. Then came Night Lad, Wingatui and King Balboa. It was one of the best races ever seen over ten furlongs on the track. Glare undoubtedly owed his success to the cleverness of Emerson. In the Nursery Handicap Compensation was followed as if it was impossibly for him to lose. He carried 770 chances more than Water Power, with Rosy Morn about 210 tickets away next. Water Power was slow to move and lost five or six lengths. Rosy Morn darted to the front and led Chanoaine and Shirada to the straight, with Compensation improving his position and Water Power making up lost ground very fast. Leading into the straight well clear Rosy Morn won by five lengths from Compensation, who beat Charmaine by a neck for second place. Water Power ran fourth close up. but the effort to make up lost ground found her out. Inevitable was a firm fancy for the Rosedale Handicap, to carry 260 chances more than Full Fling, with High Speed about 200 tickets away in third place, while Night Attire, Positive and Poor Boy also found many admirers. Dry Area was first away to lead all the way to the straight from Inevitable, Miss Redowa, Lorette and Attractive Lady. At the distance In evitable joined Dry Area and easily beat him by a length, with Full Fling four lengths off third, attended by Traho. Then came Attractive Lady and Night Attire. The winner carried his weight like a tradesman and scored well. There was heavy speculation on the Final Handicap. Glenrowan, the first fancy, carried 442 chances more than Lucky Light, with Money Mine thirteen tickets away next. Takaka was forty supporters off fourth in demand but a number of others were keenly followed. Royal Saxon led Sparkling Eyes and a bunched field almost from the barrier to three furlongs from home. As the straight was approached Royal Saxon was attended by Sparkling Eyes, Red Sea and Money Mine, while Lucky Light was moving up fast. As heads were turned for home Lucky Light ran to the leader, and in spite of boring out, went on to win by two lengths from Red Sea, with Money Mine half a length off third, just in front of Royal Saxon. Then came Glenrowan and Coomassie. There was a strong demonstration against the winner, who caused delay at the post in company with Coomassie and Red Boa. In the Waihopai Handicap the previous evening Lucky Light fought with her rider by the way and then bored out to lose her chance at the home turn. She repeated this performance to-day, but was kept going to win wide out. While there was a strong demonstration against the winner, a section of the public replied with counter applause. At the conclusion of the last race an inquiry was held -into the running of Lucky Light compared with her running in the Waihopai Handicap on the first day, when she was unplaced. After hearing evidence, the Judicial Committee unanimously resolved that the owners explanation be accepted. While the inquiry was in progress a section of the crowd staged a demonstration of protest, and remained on the course until the inquiry had concluded.
