17-YEAR-OLD GIRL CHARGED.
APPEARS ON THREE COUNTS OF THEFT.
Three charges of shop lifting were brought against Winnie Glover, seventeen years of age, a domestic from Australia, when she appeared at the Magistrate’s Court this morning. The charges were: (1) Theft of six handkerchiefs and one clock, of a total value of 39s 6d, the property of J. Ballantyne and Co. (2) Theft of a scent spray, two boxes of bath salts, one box of face powder and one powder puff, of a total value of 22s 9d, the property of Beath and Co. (3) Theft of three cakes of soap, vajued at 3s 9d, the property of the Drapery Importing Co. Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., was on the Bench.
Mr Stacey appeared for the accused. The Chief-Detective, in asking for a remand, stated that, when arrested, accused had given a false name and address. While in the custody of the matron at the police station, she had tried to escape. She had lifted a window in the cottage and bolted. Subsequently the police found that her name was Glover. Accused was living with people in Worcester Street. A search of her room revealed a quantity of goods, which there was good reason to believe were stolen. Accused when asked about them said the had found them.
A remand until Friday was granted. An application for suppression of the name was refused.
