Racing and Trotting.

(BY

“ ARGUS.”

RACING NOTES. Acceptances for the Hurunui Turi Club's meeting on Boxing Day will close to-night. * * * * Nominations for the Wyndham Racing Club’s meeting will close at five o’clock this evening. *** * . Nominations for the .Greymouth Jockey Club's meeting will close at nine o’clock P. V. Mason has left for the north with Honour, Jaleux, Greenaway and the two-year-old filly Praise, who will carry Mr G. D. Greenwood’s colours at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting. These four horses have got through a lot of useful work lately and they should be at the top of their form for engagements at Ellerslie. Honour and Praise both appear to have improved since they raced at the New Zealand Cup meeting. * * * * T. H. Gillett will take Count Cavour and Amor north for the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting. The Viscount was nominated for hack events, but it has been decided to leave him at home. Count Cavour has done very well lately and his mile and a quarter gallop with Paquito this morning was a very attractive effort. Amor is not quite at his best yet, but he has made a good recovery from the mishap that necessitated a spell a few weeks ago, and he may pay his wa3 r in minor events. * * * * Great Star has made great progress during the last few days. He appears to have thrown off the effects of his recent attack of kidney trouble, and it is stated now that he is definitely booked for the Auckland meeting, where A. H. Eastwood will ride him in the sprint events. * * * * F. D. Jones has Paquito in great order and his recent track work suggests that he will be at his best for the Auckland Cup. Limerick’s two-year-old brother, Dunraven, who will accompany him on the trip* north, has come on a lot lately. He has a fine turn of speed and he may be worth following in his Ellerslie engagements. * * * * Hoylake has done well in his recent work and he bears an improved appearance, suggestive of good form in his holiday engagements at the Manawatu meeting.

G. J. Pine has Silver Coot, Noteworthy and Don Jose looking in good order for their trip north, for the Manawatu and Wairarapa meetings. The first-named pair are sprinting well, while Don Jose only has to reproduce his track form to win races over a distance. , * * * * Gold Mint, Countlike, Rapina, Huntley, After Ten, Turnover and Wrigley will comprise H. Nurse’s team for the holiday meetings on the West Coast. * * * * It is understood that Aspiring will be sent to Auckland for the Railway Handicap, which is her only engagement at the meeting. She has received a penalty of 51b for her two successes at Woodville, but she has only 7.5 to carry even now, and she must be given a great chance. Her stable mate, Silver Paper, has not done well since he went north, and it is understood he will be sent back to Riccarton. The services of Mr A. R. Allardyce have been secured for the Dunedin summer meeting to control the loud speakers that are to be in operation. Prior to the ban on broadcasting Mr Allardyce was the principal operator at the various race meetings. Loud speakers will be installed opposite each stand, and, in addition to the racing, any important news items will also be made public to the patrons. * * 4c * Mr C. G. Dalgety’s three well-known mares, Warstep, Stardancer and Warlove, all by Martian from Stepdancer, have foals to Weather vane this season. They remained at the Elderslie Stud, where they have again been mated with the same horse, who is by Lemberg from Vain Air, by Ayrshire from Vane, a sister to Flying Fox. Another of Mr Dalgety’s mares, Paperchase, by Paper Money from Stardancer, who finished her racing career last season, has been mated with the Polymelus horse, Polazel, a mate of Nightraid in Mr A. F. Roberts’s stud.

The veteran Riccarton trainer, G. Murray Aynsley, has a small but select stud, which Chide has brought into great prominence this season, and he has a batch of promising young horses coming on, headed by a trio of good looking two-year-olds. Chide’s dam, Reproachful,; by Bonny Glen from Lady Disdain, and her sister, Contempt, have filly foals by Silverado, while Orange Blossom, half-sister to Nightmarch’s dam, by Nassau from Nantes, has a colt by Silverado, a good-looking Polymelus horse. These three mares have not been mated this season. Disdainful, a sister to Reproachful and Contempt, missed this season, and she has been mated with Polazel, by Polymelus, while Liege Lady, by Paladin from imported Strona, went to Nightraid.

TROTTING NOTES. Nominations for the summer meeting of the Canterbury Park. Trotting Club will close at noon on Tuesday. * * 4e * Nominations will close at nine o’clock to-night for the Inangahua Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on December 30. * * * * Rolex is now showing improved form in his work, and this useful pacer may win a race in the near future. * * * * Locanda Boy is remaining fairly sound, but he is only seen at his best when the tracks are soft. He may be raced on the West Coast at Christmas time. * * * * Cushla d’Or showed a lot of speed in the Caversham Handicap, on the first day of the Forbury Park Club’s meeting, but she did not see out the journey. The Rey de Oro pacer is doing well in her training work. Rap is a big, powerful pacer, who, however, is best over short courses. He is in regular work at Addington, and looks particularly well. 4* * * * The Auckland Cup is at present attracting a good deal of attention, and form points to the Nelson-owned mare Dilworth starting favourite. Her great performance in the Courtenay Handicap entitles her to a great chance in the big race if she is at her best. The Auckland Cup, however, is a particularly hard race to win, and there have of late years been a large number of surprises, usually after great contests for the good stake. * * * * Mr G. S. Simpson has been reappointed handicapper to the Kaikoura and Manawatu Trotting Clubs. * * 4e * According to reports from the south Satin King is regarded as a likely winner during the holidays. * * * * Combine might be all right if she had a different temperament, but at present she is far from being a reliablb trotter. 4: 4c 4* 4c It is seldom that Mr G. J. Barton has horses racing at a meeting and fails to collect a little towards expenses, but that was the Dunedin owner’s experience at Forbury Park.

The best has not yet been seen of Erin’s Fortune, who will be racing at the Gore and Winton meetihgs. She is a smart five-year-old, who should develop into the winner of a good class mile saddle race. * * * * Ardgour was one of the disappointments of the recent Forbury Park meeting, but the Otago Central pacer is a better horse than he showed there. He is engaged at southern meetings during the holidays, and may run closer to his true form. Merce Bingen is a nice type of trotter who should be a bit further back in the handicaps before the holiday meetings are over. She went wrong just before the running of the last Sires' Produce Stakes, but is all right again now. * * 4e 4e Lily Harold was running on so strongly at the finish of her winning effort at the Forbury Park meeting that a two-mile journey should not trouble her. She is engaged in the Gore Trotting Club Handicap, and if she goes to the post she have a big following. * * * * Round about the district Royal Stan is credited with being a useful trotter, but when he was brought up to a Forbury Park meeting he did not step up to his reputation. It may be that he is more at home on grass tracks, and so it will be interesting to see how he shapes during the holidays.

RICCARTON NOTES. Saturday. The inside of the trial grass track at Riccarton was open for fast work this morning and provided good going. There was a fair amount of work, but not many gallops of special interest. Paquito and Count Cavour attracted a lot of attention when they went out for a mile and a quarter spin, The Viscount accompanying them for the last four furlongs and a half. Count Cavour had a slight advantage most of the way, but a hundred yards from the post Paquito’s rider made an effort, and when the post was reached he was on terms with Count Cavour. The time was 2min 9sec. It was a particularly good effort, entirely pleasing to the connections of both the Auckland Cup candidates. Hoylake reeled off seven furlongs attractively in Imin 3lsec, while Phastar and Commenter ran six in lmin 18sec. Dunraven gave Coroner a start from the half-mile post. Dunraven gradually overhauled his mate, and he was going the better of the pair at the end, after registering 48 4-ssec, a smart effort. Danthonia (I. Tilson) gave a very \ good display in a school over four hurdles. Bladon (R. M’Seveney) started with him, but he was beaten off. Parysia and Tarquinius sprinted half $ mile up the back in 51sec. Coupling beat Thurso over six furlongs in lmin 19sec. Hurly Burly rattled over half . a mile up the back in 49 3-ssec, showing plenty of dash. Audience registered 51sec for half a mile. Amor covered five furlongs in lmin 4sec, and was going well at the end. Silver Coot dashed over half a mile up the back in 49sec, Noteworthy taking 49 2-ssec. Don Jose left a mile behind in lmin 40 2-ssec. It was a good performance and he should pay his way during the holidays. Tane and Waihemo finished clear of Topere after sprinting half a mile in Slsec.

TRENTHAM NOTES.

to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, December 13. Mr W. H. Gaisford had received some rather unfavourable reports ab >ut Commendation recently, but a letter from George Price by this week’s mr.-il quite reassured him. Price stated that the big Limond gelding had settled down well, and with a good strong boy to ride him in his work he was making good progress. So far Price has not given Commendation anything more than pace work, as he docs not wish the gelding to become stirred up in his new quarters. The popular Sydney trainer advised Mr Gaisford to pass by the mid-summer meetings at Randwick and give Commendation every chance, for there are plenty of good races in the early autumn. No doubt this will be the plan adopted, and Sydneyites will not see Commendation in action for some time. Star Stranger. Cylinder, Knightlike and Hunting Day will be kept at Woodville until Monday, and then they will go to Hawera. After racing there they will go on to Auckland. After his racing this week and next, and a solid gallop or two, Star Stranger will be in great order for the Auckland Cup. Shrewd is to go to Auckland to contest the Cup. Mr A. F. Symes will also have Gesture to carry his colours at Ellerslie in the two-year-old classics. Shrewd is trained by Y. H. Colello and Gesture by Mrs A. McDonald. W. D. Mcroney will take Vertigern, King Midas, Tenterden and Count Palatine to Auckland. Vertigern can be regarded as a doubtful starter in the Auckland Cup. He is a hard puller and it is difficult to obtain a strong enough boy to ride him safely at 7.7. II Lorigan will send Concentrate north for the Cup, after the Kilbroney gelding has raced at Hawera. Concentrate will be ridden by B. H. Morris at Hawera and by H. Gray in Auckland. at a few' pounds overweight. Cimabue. Diana’s Lad, Dolomite and Roval Duke may be raced at Awapuni, and it is probable that Cimabue, Dolomite and Diana’s Lad will be sent to Ellerslie for the last two days of the meeting. Aspiring is to go north to contest the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie, her only engagemant, and an effort is being made to secure H. Wiggins to ride her. She is remaining at Awapuni for a few days in the charge of G. New. Silver Paper is being sent back from Trentham to Riccarton, and it is doubtful yet whether he will race over the holidays. - It is not certain yet whether Mr T. 11. Lowry’s team will race at Ellerslie or Awapuni during the holidays, but probablv they will be at Ellerslie. J. M. Cameron takes The Hawk, Hunting Cry. Goshawk and Merry Mint, to Auckland after the Hawera meeting. TE AROHA NOTES. (Special to the “ Star”) AUCKLAND, December 13. But for the very heavy state of the going at Taumarunui. Archeen would have been more difficult to beat in the hurdle event, as between the obstacles he still has plenty of speed. He has been executing satisfactory work during the week and should at least run prominentlv at Te Awamutu on *saturdav. The Lamb is looking well and his track work is consistent. In hurdle events he is now well up in the weights, ro he will find it fairly difficult to cope with the light-weight division. Trainer C. R. Wallace scored with the Nassau gelding Bahama, at the first time of asking, and evidently he effected some improvement in his charge, who is still working nicely in his occasional visits to the local tracks. One of the improved horses locally is Te Apurangi. He is nominated for events at the Auckland meeting, where he will have to meet contestants that have been considerably longer in commission. The Archiestown gelding is a very generous worker and should make good in due course.

The most leisurely worker on the tracks is the Acre-Elinore two-year-old, Leasehold. In company, however, when asked to gallop he acts his part in good style and gets over the ground in a workmanlike manner.

Black Maire, who has not been finishing on well in his mile and a quarter races, is now nominated for events of less distance and may do better. He shows ample pace on the tracks, and his racing condition shows he should run a mile at a strong pace. Volimond was on the track on Tuesday in a four furlong gallop with Trig, and, with the heavier rider, showed her brilliancy. It may not be long before the Limond mare makes amends for recent disappointments. Ah Wera and Crown Arch have not been asked to undertake strenuous tasks, and both may be all the better after indulging in a brief holiday. Judging by Tarrapeen’s form at Takapuna and Taumarunui the Spalpeen mare may be better suited to a firm track. She has been working freely on the tracks during the week. The course proper was fairly fast yesterday, more so than previously this season, and some interesting work was witnessed. Glenstar and Miss Albyn were the first to line out. They slipped over four furlongs in 50 2-ssec, with the first named a length in advance at the post. Trig, Tarrapeen, The Lamb, Kanui, Gdenison and Antique executed serviceable w r ork. Archeen put in two rounds at a good striding pace and was anxious to go faster. He is working well just now. From a standing start the Marble Arch-Lacemaker filly ran half a mile in 53sec. Sir Russell and Black Maire were associated in a sprint over five furlongs, with a moving start, the last four taking 50 l-ssec, the chestnut finishing up a length to the good. Black Maire would have been closer up, but did not run too kindly down the straight. Lucky Alice was slightly better than Te Apurangi over five furlongs run in lmin 3 4-ssec. Leasehold had an advantage of half a length over King Lap in a three furlong dash, which took 38sec. TROTTING BOARD HOLDS MEETING. The board of the New Zealand Trotting Association met last evening, Mr J. H. Williams presiding. There were also present: Messrs J. R. M’Kenzie, S. W. Kelly, H. W. Kitchingham, J. B. Thomson, R. A. Armstrong and W. Hayward. The Victorian Trotting Association notified that the Royal assent had been given to the Bill vesting the control of all trotting meetings in the association. At the request of the Trotting League of Victoria, it was decided to forward to that body thirty copies of the New Zealand Association’s rules. The Victorian Trotting Association notified that G. Minchin and the horse Red Basil had been disqualified by the Melbourne Trotting Club. The disqualifications were endorsed. Mr A. M’Dougall attended to show cause why he shoult not be dealt with for a breach of the rules in respect to the transfer of the horse Tarzan, which he had sold. Mr M’Dougall said the purchaser had promised to attend to everything regarding the transfer, and the speaker had therefore bothered no further about it. Replying to a question, Mr M’Dougall said the horse was the first he had owned, “and,” he added “it will probably be the last.” It was reported that the purchaser of the horse, Mr H. Hurley, had pleaded ignorance. It was decided that both parties be fined £1 each. Evidence was read of inquiries held by the Metropolitan Trotting Club regarding the accident in the Dominion Handicap, when Trampfast (Lowe) was interfered with by Young Blake (Tomkinson). As no decision had been reached by the club the matter was held over. The Auckland Trotting Club notified that S. V. Brightwell and F. Smith had been fined for being late at the post and not for disobedience at the post as reported earlier. Mr R. T. Reid, stipendiary steward, reported that the original report was correct. It was decided to hpld the matter over pending the receipt of further information. F. G. Holmes wrote asking for a remission of the fine of £5 imposed on him by the Metropolitan Trotting Club for not applying for a permit for a change of gear, he not having used toeweights on the horse Audo Bell on the first two days, but having used them on the third. It was stated that the absence of the toe-weights on the first two days was due to the omission of an employee. The action of the club in fining Holmes £5 was endorsed, and the application for remission was declined. The New Zealand Metropolitan Club reported having fined A. E. Bussell £lO and cautioned him for undue use of the whip. It was decided that in addition to the fine, Bussell’s license as a driver be suspended for three months from the date of the offence. The Metropolitan Club notified that L. F. Berkett had been fined £5 for undue use of the whip. The action of the club was endorsed. The same club notified that W. Hughes had been fined £5 for a similar offence. The action of the club was endorsed.

The Forbury Park Club notified that it had fined J. S. Miller £5 for failing to notify an interest in Nelson’s Prince. The club recommended the remission of the fine. It was decided to remit the fine, and to inquire whether the nomination paper of J. Dale was in order. Mr S. J. Thomas wrote asking on what mark Royal Silk would be placet! in future events, as a result of his running in the New Zealand Derby. At present he did not know what races to nominate his horse for, as the handicapping system was no guide in such a case. Mr Kitchingham expressed the view that the race should be regarded as a 3min 30sec class. Mr Hayward said the handicappers were in a very awkward position when dealing with Derby horses. It was decided that the matter be left in the hands of the chairman and Mr H. F. Nicoll to confer, and, to advise handicappers if thought necessary It was left to the president to reply to Mr Thomas. Mr R. J. Sterling wrote inquiring about the handicapping of Benefice at Auckland. It was decided to advise Mr Sterling that he should apply to the club. It was decided to ask the Banks Peninsula Racing Club how an erroi occurred in the times recorded for the placed horses in the Duvauchelle Handicap. The Licensing Committee recom mended that, with reference to a proposal to place Young Author on the schooling list, the horse be given another chance. The recommendation was adopted. The deaths of the following horses were reported: Author Dillon, Peter Swift, Sir Fulham, Successful, Waverley, Lady Barrington and Grey Lady. It was decided to hold no meeting during January. The next meeting will be held on February 7. NOMINATIONS. WAIAU RACING CLUB.
