ASHBURTON NEWS.

(Special to the “Star”! ASHBURTON, December 11. Sir Henry Buckleton, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, paid brief visits to Ashburton and Rakaia on his way through by car from the south yesterday.

Hakatere Sports Club. The annual meeting of the Hakatere Sports Club was held last evening, Mr A. Cates presiding. There was a ’fair attendance. The balance-sheet showed that the club commenced the year with a credit of £ls 0s Bd, and ended with a credit balance of £9 13s 9d. The principal items of revenue were: Receipts New Year’s Day sports £lOl 3s sd, dances £32 0s Id, concert £5, tennis club donation £2O. The chief items of expenditure were Additions to hall and supper room £62 18s 6d, piano £35 and electric lighting £lO. The election of officers resulted:—• Executive committee, Messrs G. Thomas, A. Cates, W. Sparrow. T. Munro J. Burrows, H. M’Elrea, P Cookson, F*. Thomas, F. Crum; hall committee, Messrs A. Cates, J. Burrows. F. Thomas; representative on tennis committee, Mr F. Crum; entertainment committee, Mesdames Opie, Burrows, Cates, Munro, Misses Crum, Cates, Sparrow, Messrs A. Cates and W. Sparrow; sports committee, Messrs FI. J. Chapman. 11. M’Elrea, J. Rae, G. Thoma?, W. SparIrow, IT. Anderton, R. Thomas, J. Munro, P. Cookson, M. Jamieson, R. Shearman; side-shows, Messrs Crum. Sparrow, Burrows and Cates; toys. Messrs P. Cookson and A Cates; ground committee, Messrs J. Burrows, A V. Cates, R. Thomas, C. Thomas. A. Thomas and R. Shearman, jun ; refreshments, Mesdames Opie, Burrows, Cates, Thomas and lady members of tennis committee. It was decided to hold the annual sports on New Year’s Day. If weather conditions are unsuitable they will take place on January 2, 1930. A concert and dance will be held in the evening. The various churches were granted the use of the hall for Sunday services during the holiday season
