RACING NOTES. The weather was fine for training operations at Riccarton this morning, but the ploughed track was dead, as a result of overnight rain and an early morning shower. _ There were not many horses working, a number of the trainers having teams racing at Ashburton. * * H: P. V. Mason worked his lot the reverse way., Honour and Jaleux were companions over a mile, but they were not sent at top, the last seven furlongs occupying lmin 35sec. Praise and Greenaway were given threequarter pace work, while Pride and Goblin Market did serviceable tasks. He * * He G. J. Pine was out early with his team, Silver Coot covering five furlongs in lmin 7sec. and Don Jose a mile in lmin 50sec. * * * * After Ten went attractively while beating Tarquinius over half a mile in 51 2-ssec, while Sea Gay went over the same ground alone in 50 3-ssec. H: He sje sje , Paquito covered nine furlongs on the plough in lmin 58 l-ssec, having Dunraven as a mate for the last five. It was a useful gallop and Paquito finished on strongly. * He * H« Count Cavour, with Hounslow to bring him home, ran nine furlongs in lmin 56*1-ssec. The veteran began slowly, but he was going on in great style at the end. of his task, which showed him up in a very favourable light as a candidate for holiday engagements. * * * * Mr G. D. Greenwood’s team for Auckland will probably consist of Honour, Jaleux, Greenaway and Praise. . * * *; * Paquito and Limerick’s two-year-old brother, Dunraven, are almost certain to carry Mr H. A. Knight’s colours at. the Auckland meeting. $. * * * Great Star is making a gradual recovery from his attack of kidney trouble, and if he continues to do well during the next week, he will probably go north for the Auckland meeting. * * * The Viscount may accompany Count Cavour on his trip to Auckland. * * . * * Pangolin figures in the four hurdle races at the Auckland meeting. * » • • W. G. Hobbs contemplated resting his team during the holidays, but the plans have been changed, and Dutch Money and Tarquinius may race at the Dunedin meeting. __* * * * E. Scoullar expects to do the Dunedin meeting with Mr W. T. Hazlett’s pair, Lorette and Parysia. * * * * Ihurso may represent R. Longley’s stable at Wingatui this month, while Master Clarence is a likely sort from F. P. Claridge’s team. He * h= He D. Campbell contemplates doing the southern holiday meetings with Tcheka and Subdivision. He He * * Since F. Tilley produced Cadland with some effect at Otaki his new horses have come into the public eye. He has a maiden plater for the Woodville meeting in Platina, a three-year-old filly by Callaghan from Isabel. This filly is thus a half-sister to Cashier and Otairi. Isobel was a fine mare and Callaghan, although he has not had great chances at the stud, has sired one or two fair horses. As he is by the Desmond horse Fairy King from Penny Forfeit, by Forfarshire from Pennywise, he is bred well enough. Platina has not been raced, but reports from Wanganui are to the effect that she can gallop. It is almost too much to expect that Tilley has another Cadland. _ . * * He * It is stated to be quite certain that Phar Lap will not be required to race before next February. The New Zealand gelding is engaged in the Caulfield Futurity Stakes, which event is run over seven furlongs at weight-for-age, with a scale of penalties and allowances. Phar Lap has incurred a 101 b penalty and he will therefore be called upon to carry 9.1. * * * * Advices to hand from Wanganui state that Mr G. F. Moore has decided to retire Reremoana, and it can be said that the son of Hallowmas has well earned the rest that is now before him. Since he came on the scene at two years old in 1922 he has contested seventy-two races. He won twentythjree of his engagements and was second on thirteen other occasions. Races up to a mile could be regarded as most to the liking of Reremoana, and when he won the double—Great Easter Handicap and Challenge Stakes at Riccarton in the autumn of 1928, at which period he was rising eight years old, it could be argued that he was at the top of his form. As Reremoana captured prize-money to the amount of £13,500, under the colours of his breeder, Mr G. F. Moore, the Wanganui sportsman has good reason to remember the big chestnut with affection. * * * * According to a Sydney writer the sum paid for Aussie and Papatu when Mr G. Paul sold the two geldings in Sydney recently was 2500 guineas, 2000 guineas for Aussie and 500 guineas for Papatu. Mr A. J. Matthews, who is the. new owner of Aussie and Papatu, is credited with having a good win when Papatu scored a victory in the Homebush Handicap at Warwick Farm last month.

M. J. Carroll, the trainer of Paganelli, who was present at Feilding, in discussing the Feilding Stakes with a Waikato pressman on his return home, was naturally puzzled at the defeat of the Lord Quex —Ringdove gelding. It was his belief that the condition of the going was responsible for Paganelli’s failure to show his customary brilliant speed. Two days prior to the meeting Paganelli had run a smart five furlongs, while some days prior to that he had put half a mile behind in time that was sensational. There had been a good deal of rain on the course just prior to race day. All Carroll could put it down to was that the galloping surface was such that Paganelli could not stretch out with his customary freedom. He was never going like a winner, he said, while Ceremony, who is also particularly speedy, was not capable of producing his usual dash, in the classic. Paganelli, who has returned home, has been absent since the latter part of October, having raced at Trentham, Riccarton, and Feilding for a win, a second, and a third in his three starts. He is in excellent order. Paganelli is engaged at Awapuni and Ellerslie at Christmas, but a decision has not been reached yet as to at which centre he will race. * * * * There is a growing tendency in Australia to give promising young horses time to mature before testing them in races. Good stakes are available for two-year-olds in the spring, but it is becoming quite the custom to reserve youngsters of presumed class till the autumn. In Sydney last Easter thirteen yearlings were sold at four-figure prices, and so far they have not beer raced. On this subject the opinion cf James Scobie on the question of preparing yearlings (or sale is of interest. In his book, “ My life on the Australian Turf,” he claims that horses are much harder to train to-day than they were in his youth. “ I am referring to young thoroughbreds whose physical powers need to be developed,” he states. “ Yearlings, as done up for sale at present, are unfit to be broken in. They ought to be turned out until most of the fat is stripped off, for they look better on the day of the sale than ever they will in training. My conviction is that many juveniles, that come under the hammer do not receive enough exercise. They would benefit immensely by having paddocks in which to roam about and gallop. It spoils their action to be running round in rings. Having bought hundreds of yearlings for mvself and other people, I maintain that the present thoroughbred does not last nearly so long as those that were brought down from the western district as juveniles in years gone by. . . . You cannot give them too much feed, so long as they get the necessary exercise. At present the purchase of yearlings is a huge lottery; but the men who want horses are forced to buy and take their chance of obtaining an animal that turns out utterly useless.” Criticism from such an authority is worthy of notice. It is contrary to the expressed belief of more than one breeder that buyers like to see the yearlings in show condition. TROTTING NOTES. Acceptances for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting will close at noon on Tuesday. H« H« * * The summer meeting of the Ashburton Trotting Club has attracted the usual heavy list of nominations, and in spite of the attractions in various parts of the Dominion large fields will be seen at Ashburton on Boxing Day. sje He He He Kingcraft, who started favourite in the final of the New Zealand Cup, but lost his chance by a bad beginning, will probably be seen racing at the Canterbury Park Club’s meeting at New Year., * He * He Apex is doing a lot of useful training work at Addington. The Denver Huon pacer, when first raced, was thought to be best over a journey, as nearly all his sire’s progeny are fine stayers. Apex, however, came out and won a couple of mile and a quarter events, in which he showed a useful turn of speed. He may later be found racing over two miles. * He * He Brixton was a trifle unlucky to be beaten at Rangiora on Labour Day, owing to making a somewhat slow beginning and getting a bad passage. He is a useful pacer and is doing well in his training work at Addington. * * * * G. M’Kendry has the big pacer, Great Abdullah, moving along satisfactorily in training. He looks as though he will not be long before he wins a race, The Nelson Bingen—Queen May pacer is now being sent along at a much faster clip than formerly and is getting into good racing condition He looks like making a useful sort. * He * He St Hubert has been in work for some time at Addington but he has done very little racing. He will require to show a lot of improvement to have any chance against the large number of young pacers now in commission ❖ * * * * Challenger bears a well-trained appearance and C. Tasker has the pacer going freely in his work at Addington Challenger has a good deal of speed, but he has not been sent far in training work. He He * * Logan Brae, the brother to the bril liant Logan Park, was an acceptor on the first day at Forbury Park, but was not started. lie has been doing steady work at Addington since his return but will require to improve considerably before he reaches the record of Logan Park. He does not exhibit the dash and determination in his races that is shown by his relative

The trotter Brent Boy was worked at Addington during the week, but his performance was not an impressive one. He is slow in coming to his best speed. He He * * Cyone was worked at Addington a few days ago with Bonny Logan, and seemed to be putting more dash into her work. * * * * Tahoe is doing well in his training work at present. He is a useful sort over all distances and looks likely to win a race in the near future. * * * * Salient, when he raced at New Brighton early in the season, looked like making a useful pacer, but in his subsequent races he has not improved as much as tyas expected. He is now picking up fast and is pacing well in his work.

Kreisler looks in capital shape and is likely to be one of D. Bennett’s team for the West Coast campaign at Christmas and New Year. * * * * Cushla D’Or showed a lot of speed in her races at Forbury Park. In the Caversham Handicap she established a good lead at the end of a round of the mile and a half race. She came into the straight first, but failed to see out the final stages. The Rey de Oro pacer is best in the meantime over short courses. H* * * * Logan Chief put up a couple of useful performances at Forbury Park. On the second day. in the chief event, he was fourth and finished stronger than usual. The track was evidently to his liking

Thorpie, although not long in work, put up a creditable performance in the mile harness event on the first day at Forbury Park, in which he finished third to Orphan and Hector’s Own. He was not started on the second day. He * He * Since El Direct came south to be trained, the Taranaki pacer has put up some useful performances without winning. He was responsible for a couple of good races at Forbury Park. * 4 * * Ethiopian performed badly last week at Forbury Park, where he seemed to be in trouble negotiating the turns. The Wildwood Junior pacer is seen to the best advantage on a larger course. Ethiopian does not seem to be in his best form at present, but he has done well since his return from the south. He is a good stayer and useful over a two-mile journey when thoroughly fit. * * jfC * The race track at New Brighton was open for work this morning, but very few trainers availed themselves of the opportunity to work their horses. The track appeared to be in capital condition. * * * * The trotter Delfashion covered about a mile and a half, going without any mistakes throughout the journey. • * * * * William the Great led Talent throughout a work-out over a little further than a mile, but the pacers were not fully extended. * * He He El Direct was accompanied by a maiden pacer by Rey de Oro, the pacer going a mile and a .quarter. * * * * Repute trotted nearly two miles, going solidly all the way. She was not sent at top speed. * * * He Jolly Chimes did a little further than a mile, moving in pleasing style. He He He * Teremoa’s task was nearly a mile and a half. The first part was not at top speed, but the pacer came up the straight at an increased rate.

HAKANOA’S DOUBLE AT TAUMARUNUL

(Special to the " Star.**) TAUMARUNUI, Dunedin 6. The Taumarunui Racing Club's meeting was commenced in showery weather and on a heavy track. Hakanoa was the hero of the day, winning the Cup and the Flying Handicap. Hector Gray broke a collar bone when Ohinemun fell in the Cup. For the Trial Plate, in which eleven out of the twenty acceptors were scratched, Parfait Amour, the favourite, carried £270, with Nassau Lady (£267) and Measurer (£9l) next in demand. When the field had settled down Dainty Manners was in front from Derry Belle, Rose Willonyx and Parfait Amour. Then came Searcher, Star Lupin and Lady Eustace. Derry Belle was in charge crossing the top, with Dainty Manners and Parfait Anjour close up, followed by Lady Eustace, Rose Willonyx and Rangitown. When they turned for home Dai«ty Manners was just in front of Derry Belle and Parfait Amour, with Rangitown, Rose Willonyx and Nassau Lady following. Parfait Amour took charge over the last furlong and went on to score an easy win by four lengths from Dainty Manners, who beat Derry Belle by three lengths. Rose Willonyx was fourth, followed by Rangitown, Measurer, Nassau Lady and Searcher. The defections in the Taringamotu Handicap were Bahama, Parfait Amour, Tuku, Rangitown and Day Guide. When the machine closed Partial Eclipe (£366), Abbess (£261) and Show Prince (£138) carried the bulk of the money. Snow Prince began best from Abbess, Rose Lupin, Partial Eclipse. Ruby Dawn, Abbey Qufeen and Tatsy. but crossing the top Abbess was out clear from Arch Queen, Snow Prince and Rose Lupin, who were racing in line, with Partial Eclipse next. Abbess was first to turn for home, attended by Abbey Queen and Rose Lupin. Although the lastnamed threw out a strong challenge she failed to get up by a short bead, with Abbey Queen two and a half lengths away in third place. Snow Prince was fourth. Then came Ruby Dawn. Tatsy and Partial Eclipse. With Macroom, Billikins, Glenstar and Master Roley missing from the Cup only five horses were left to face the starter. Ohinemun was favourite, being entrusted with £529, next in demand being Glena Bay (£294) and

Wenday (£289). Sir Burnett began quickest, while Glena Bay was slow to move. Passing the stand the order was Sir Burnett, about four lengths clear of Hakanoa, with Ohinemuri and Wenday, who were on terms, next. They went towards the back stretch as named. Sir Burnett fell at this stage, and Ohinemuri was also brought down, and her rider, H. Gray, had his collarbone broken. This left Hakanoa in front, with Wenday and Glena Bay following. They turned for as named. There was no alteration in the run to the post, Hakanoa winning easily by three lengths, with Glena Bay a similar distance away third. An inquiry was held regarding Sir Burnett falling. The mishap was proved to be caused by one of the horse s bandages coming undone. The owner, Mr George White, was fined £5 for failing to sew the bandage on securely. Scratching? were numerous in the Matapuna Handicap, for which eleven candidates were withdrawn. Most money (£296) was invested on Joy Germ, while Awamutu (£223) and Xor\ al Tea (£195) also got fair support. White Ringlet was first to break the hne. Then came Awamutu, Pure Tea. Kiritahanga. Toy Germ and Norvai Ten. with Abbey Queen next. When they turned for home, White Ringlet was still in charge from Awamutu and Abbey Queen, followed by Pure Tea and Joy Germ. Abbey Queen was in front half way 'down the straight, when Toy Germ came through fast and g- t up in time to beat her by a neck, with Perennia, who finished strongly three lengths away third. White Ringlet was the next to finish, followed I>y Awamutu, Luxurious, Princess, Snow. Pure Tea, Norvai Tea and Kiritahanga. Red Day and Ring Potoa were not saddled up for the Mananui Hurdles. f<>r which there were only four starters. Archeen (£395) and Master Roley ( -295 1 carried the bulk of the money, and the public -were correct in their summing up. Archeen began best and led past the stand from Otranto and Spaipiko, with Master Roley last. There was no change in the running along the back, and crossing the top Otranto and Archeen were °n terms in the lead, with a .aster Roley handy. They turned for home in that order and Archeen was first over the last fence, when Piaster Roley put in his claim and got the verdict by a length and a half, with Otranto a neck away third and Soalpiko next.

The defections in the Matiere Handi cap were Antique, Tuku and Tasty The public elected Valqueete favourite (£360», next in demand being Always (£334) and Tarrapeen (£221). When they were let go Tarrapeen was first tr show out from Valquette, Bahama Day Lass and Always, but Bahama was in charge crossing the top, with Valquette and Tarrapeen next. Baha ma was .first into the straight from T);.v Lass' and Valquette, and holding 1 vvn in the run home he won comMy by a length and a half from .ys. who beat Day Lass by threeqUarters of a length. Valquette was fourth and Tarrapeen last. Ohinemuri. Macroom and Archeen were withdrawn from the Rangaros Flying Handicap, and Billikins, who carried £464. was made favourite, next in request being Marble King (£363) and Owairaka (£268). When they wer« let go Billikins went to the front from Marble King, Owairaka and Hakanoa the last named running up second to Billikins as they, turned into the straight, with Marble King and Owairaka next. Hakanoa took charge about half a furlong from home and Billikins by a length, with Marble King third, a similar distance away, followed by Owairaka. Hakanoa was ridden in the cup bv MTavish and in the Rangaroa Handicap by Goldfinch. A field of seven went to the post for the Owhango Hack Handicap. Grand Arch (£431) was favourite, with Unoco (£369) and Cybele (£284) next in request. Abbess was soon in front and led along the back from Foxhound. Coll. Unoco, Cybele, Red Day and Grand Arch. There was no material change across the top. Into the straight Abbess was attended by Coll. Cvbeie and Red Day. Cybele finished best to win by half a length from Coli, with Abbess three-quarters of a length away. Then came Red Da\*, Arch, Unoco and Foxhound.
