"CINDER SHIFTING” AT MONICA PARK.

Any now sport or form of entertaindient takes some time to capture the fancy of the public, but broadsiding, dirt-track racing, or cinder-shifting, as Jt is variously called, has attracted huge crowds in a short time. In Christchurch every week bigger and bigger crowds attend the - Speedway Tneetings at Monica Park and go home not only satisfied, but also determined to vo again. The sport possesses a fascination all its own, and the excitement of the crowd givtes a new atmosphere to the meeting, infectious in the way it spreads. The riders catch the spirit of the crowd, and they ride in a care-free manner, hurling their machines into terrific slides round the bends, with throttles wide open and waves of cinders flying out behind. The finest exponent of this new sport in New Zealand to-day is undoubtedly Harry Mangham. He has for some time beten one of the foremost speedsters in South Australia, and is here under special engagement to the management of the Monica Park Speedway. Matched against him to-morrow are the best of the local riders, and,, with the improvement they have shown at succeeding meetings, they are gtetting closer and closer to the scratch rider, and they emulate his dashing slides, too. In the present beautiful weather, a night at the Speedway is a real treat, and no better-entertainment could be found for to-morrow night.
