AUCKLAND RADIO MAN JOINS BYRD PARTY.
(Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, December 4. ‘ To join Commander Richard Byrd’s Antarctic expedition, Mr R. J. Orbell, the well-known technical editor of “ New Zealand Radio,” left Auckland to-day. Mr Orbell’s invitation to join the Polar explorers was undoubtedly due to the eminent place he holds in wire* less study and practice in New Zealand. He is well known as one of the .first wireless experimenters to establish two-way communication between New Zealand and England. For a time he was connected with the Radio Broadcasting Company, and in the infancy of wireless development in the Dominion was engaged in work at the old IYA station in the Strand Arcade, Auckland. Mr Orbell possesses wide scientific knowledge of radio. His articles as technical editor of “ N.Z. Radio ” havekept him much before radio fans. He is well known in Christchurch, where, in the 44 good old days,’* his transmissions under the call-sign aAA were eagerly listened to by every man and boy in the game and within range cl • his station.
