SELF-HELP STORES GIVE PICNIC TO CHILDREN.
In accordance with the offer made in connection with their hand-writing competition, the Self-Help Stores Company took the sixth standard children of the East Christchurch School (of which class Doris May, winner of the first prize, was a member) for a motor drive and picnic to Waikuku Beach yesterday. The day was brilliantly fine and the sixty-five children thoroughly enjoyed their day’s outing. The party left early in the morning and, after a long drive by motor-bus, arrived at Waikuku, where the day was spent in games and competitions. The weather was perfect, so a number of children passed the greater part of the day in the water. The children were well provided with biscuits, sweets, icecream and soft drinks. The party left the beach late in the afternoon, arriving in the city at 6.30 p.m. The teacher in charge expressed the thanks of the children and cheers were given for Mr B. Sutherlaxid, managing director of the company, who had made a special trip down from Wellington for the outing.
