M'DONALD REAPPEARS IN CLUB CRICKET.
MELBOURNE, November 23. A big crowd at Fitzroy to-day accorded E. A. M’Donald a cordial reception when he heappeared for the home side against North Melbourne in District cricket. M’Donald has been playing in England for seven years, and will return early in 1930. He looked well, and his bowling showed accuracy of length and direction, but his customary pace was lacking, no doubt due to his only having landed two days ago. After bowling five overs for 29 runs he was relieved. Baring, taking risks, got 12 olf his second over. It has been stated that M’Donald will play for Victoria. If he does he will be ineligible for Lancashire next season. Five years ago Frank Tarrant made a trip to Australia and played for Victoria. He did the same in the 1907-8 season, and made 105 against South Australia and 206 against New South Wales. The latter score was the highest against New South Wales till Ponsford and Ryder ran amuck in that record total in 1926. Probably it was Tarrant who caused a change in the rules of county cricket. The rule now governing the county cricket competition reads: —“A cricketer may not play for more than one county within the calendar year. The penalty for an infringement of this rule to be disqualification for two years. A British Dominion or State shall, for the purpose of this rule, be regarded as a county.” 'Therefore if M’Donald plays for Victoria he will automatically disqualify himself for tw6 years as a Lancashire player.
