Bowling.
Entries for the Dominion championship tournament, which is to be held at Dunedin, commencing on January 13, close with the secretary, Mr R. Hanning, P.O. Box 316, Dunedin, on Saturday. There will be a good represei> tation of Christchurch players at the tournament, strong teams having entered from most of the leading clubs. In several clubs as many as three rinks have been formed to take part in the tournament, and it would be very gratifying if on this occasion one or more of the championships came to this centre. v ;*? s.* The pennant competition is now well advanced, the first four rounds haying been played, and keen interest has been taken throughout. It is expected that a table showing the percentage of wins and losses by each club will be issued week. So far the clubs are in the dark as to how they stand in comparison to other clubs, and this table is being eagerly awaited. There will be no pennant matches on Saturday next, as two important fixtures, the Steans Cup match against South Canterbury, at Timaru, and the Town versils Country and Seaside match, are to take place. This year the town players will be the guests of the country and seaside clubs, and the games will be played on the New Brighton, Sumner, Rakaia, Leeston and Kaiapoi greens. Three hundred and twenty players will take part in the match. Following the usual custom the annual bowling tournament at the Sunnyside Mental Hospital will be held at the institution's green on Monday, December 16 (Anniversary Day), the object being to raise the usual Christmas Cheer Fund for the patients. The games will start at 9.30 a.m. and lunch and afternoon tea will be provided. This tournament is usually well supported by the Christchurch bowlers, and it is anticipated that there will be a full entry on this occasion. The Match Committee of the centre wishes to draw the attention of players taking part in pennant games away from their home green to the necessity of taking their cards back with them to their own green, whether they win or lose. It is necessary that the club secretaries should receive all the cards in order to make up their returns, as they are required to supply the centre secretary with the results of every game in which their clubs take part. It is unlikely that any change will be made in the date of the annual match against Otago for the Redpath Shield, as was suggested recently in Dunedin. This season the match is to be played in Dunedin, and it was thought by some of the southern plaj--ers that it might suit the Canterbury team better to arrange the match just before the Dominion tournament. It is felt, however, that the original date, which is at the end of February, will be quite suitable to the Canterbury players. The Barnett Tiki match against Wellington will be played in Christchurch on the Friday before the tournament commences. Once again, says a southern writer, it is necessary to draw attention to the rule which governs the laying of the mat. In a friendly game, as a matter of courtesy, the leader of the losers of the preceding head often lays the mat for his opponent. This is an act of courtesy only, not a right. The leader of the winning side has the right to lay the mat where he pleases within the rules as laid down, and an important right it is on some occasions. The writer has heard so much argument on this question that he has come to the conclusion that it is mistaken politeness for one player to lay the mat for another, even in a friendly game. A bad habit often is thus formed. This is how the rule reads: “ The winners of the head may* place the mat in the centre of the rink between the point where the jack lay and the ditch, provided that the front of the mat shall not be more than 20ft nor less than 6ft from the ditch.” The Dominion Tournament. “ Boomerang,” of the “ Sydney Referee,” makes further complimentary reference .to the big tournament next January, taking as his text the receipt of posters and other literature from Dunedin. So far he has not heard of any likely competitors in Australia, al-' though he makes this statement; “A New Zealand Dominion tournament in January, to either of the four centres (Wellington, Dunedin, Auckland, Christchurch) is the finest and most profitable in the world of bowls. The New Zealand Council needs to approach the State tribunals early to arrange for tests of strength, and then something more than a mere passing notice will result. My remedy for the position is for the Dominion to alter its constitution, so that any of the four centres may arrange for tests with any State of the Commonwealth, or interstate combine. Then it would be rushed.” It is very doubtful, however, if this is necessary, for already there is all the required machinery for doing what “ Boomerang ” so aptly suggests, writes “ Trundler,” in the “Auckland Star.” No centre would care to take the responsibility of arranging tests with overseas players except in the year when it has the Dominion tournament, i.e., once in four years, and during that year the local centre executive and the Dominion Council are virtually one and the same body, so far as tournaments are concerned. This year all control is located at Dunedin, but next July it will be transferred to Auckland, and then it will be Auckland’s opportunity to invite competitors from Australia, but these invitations will go from this city as the headquarters of the Dominion Council, and not as the Auckland Cen.tre, Apparently the government of the game in New Zealand is not quite understood in Australia, for although the two governing councils have very similar powers the New Zealand Council is probably more elastic through moving every year to a new city.
SUMNER BOWLING CLUB FAREWELLS OLD MEMBER.
M‘r W. Henley, a popular member of lhe Sumner Bowling Club, was the guest of honour at a farewell evening held at the Sumner Bowling Club pavilion. The president (Mr T. F. Chambers), in proposing the health of the guest of the evening, said that Mr Henley’s departure from the club would be keenly felt. Mr Henley had been a member for many years. Not only had he been in leading rinks in Canterbury competitions, but he. had been a member of teams holding honours in New Zealand competitive events. He- was also actively interested in the social affairs of the club. 'ln presenting Mr Henley with a case of pipes, he expressed the hope for the former’s continued success on the greens of his new club. A flying fifty billiard tournament was won by the guest of honour.
