Mr and Mrs Burt (Glasgow) are staying at Warner’s Hotel. The Misses Hogg returned to Invercargill to-day. Miss ,S. Hogg has recently returned from a' trip to America. Mrs A. Tempter (Redcliffs) is spending the week-end with Mrs J. O. Knight, at Racecourse Hill. Miss Farrow (Hanmer) is staying with Mrs 11. Stone, Church Street, Rangiora. Mr and Mrs J. H. Phillips (Western Australia) are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mrs Ernest Clarke (Melbourne) and Miss D. Theomin (Dunedin) are guests at the United Service Hotel. Miss Agnes M’Grath and Mr E. M’Grath (Southbrook) left on Monday on a visit to Auckland. Mr and Mrs Sam Hollander, of Norman’s Road, have returned from Sydney. Mrs G. P. Warburton (England), Miss W. Pinkerton (Rangiora), Mrs R. A. Chaffey (Waiau) and Colonel and Mrs M’Donald (Wairarapa) are guests at Warner’s Hotel. Miss Greenwood, physical drill instructress for the Canterbury Education Board, will leave this week for Auckland to join the Maui Pomare for Norfolk Island, where she intends spending her vacation. The latest arrivals at the Hotel Federal include:—Mr J. R. Oliver (Wellington), Mrs J. Court (Auckland), Mrs D. E. Woffinden (England), Miss E. M. Robertson, Miss E. Crisp (Auckland), Mrs H. Nj Dix, Miss Mills (Blenheim). Mr and Mrs Gardiner and two children (Brooksi.de), Misses Odlins (Napier), Miss June Macfarlane, Miss Hanson (Waikari), Mr S. Gould (Christchurch), and Mr and Mrs White (Dunedin) are recent arrivals at the New Brighton Cafe. The St John’s Ambulance Brigade bazaar which opened this afternoon is an excellent place to do Christmas shopping. Besides many useful and attractive Christmas gifts, there are for sale hand-made baby clothes and small children's. The efficient organisation : of the bazaar will make it worth while for everyone to attend this evening or tomorrow afternoon and evening, in the Orange Hall. Dr Constance D’Arcy, of Sydney, who is president of the University Women Graduates’ Association, has been elected to a seat On the New South Wales University Senate, the only woman thus chosen. Miss Kidd also sits on the Senate, but she is a nominee of the State Government. Dr D’Arcy is president of the Women Workers’ Association, and a vice-presi-dent of the National Council of Women. A London paper of November 27 says: “Gossip Writer”, in a letter re-plying-to the London hostess who told of the “cads’ parties”, to which “impossible persons” are invited, says that she is one of those whom the hostess denounces. The writer says that the hostess apparently does not know that anyone suspected of contributing paragraphs to the newspapers is pursued, flattered and bribed to a well-nigh incredible degree by increasing numbers of people, many of whom bear honoured names. “The London hostess,” she says, “would be amazed to learn to what lengths > well-known people go in order to obtain personal publicity. The bearers of illustrious names and titles proudly proclaim themselves gossip writers. Is it surprising if smaller fry are tempted by invitations to join shooting parties with gifts of fitted dressing-cases, fur coats, and innumerable free meals?”
Colonel and Mrs Barclay arrived from the north yesterday morning. Miss Nancy Mathieson has returned from a holiday visit to Kaka Point. Mrs M’D. Vincent and her daughter, Cashmere Hills, are staying at Otira. Mrs W. H. Clark (Bealey Avenue), who has been visiting Hanmer, has returned to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs W. A. Kennedy, of Wellington, are paying a short visit to Christchurch. Mrs Childs, Wellington, is the guest of Mrs W. Lockhead, Alton Brook,” Southbridge. - Mrs A. J. Beamslejv Southbridge, has been visiting Mrs Fuchs, Waipara, North Canterbury. The Merivale Football Club will hold its annual picnic at Waihora Park, Motukarara, on December 15. Mrs R. Hill,. Christchurch, and her sister, Mrs Britain, are the guests of Mrs E. Inwood, “ Waihora,” Milltown. Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., and Mrs Mosley are expected to arrive in Christchurch on December 18 from a trip to England. Miss F. Rodd, who is the guest of her cousin, Mrs Cyril Ward, in Christchurch, is leaving this week en route for her home in Sydney. Miss Webster and Miss Jessie 'Webster, Leeston, arrived home by the Niagara after a holiday trip to Great Britain. A bazaar in aid of the funds of the St John Ambulance Brigade Building Fund w’ill be held in the Orange Hall, Worcester Street, to-day and to-mor-row. Recently, an enjoyable. “ bathroom evening ” was given by Miss L. Keen, Bealey Avenue, in honour of a bride-to-be, Miss Mabel Rutledge, whose marriage takes place early next month. Miss Rutledge received a collection of most acceptable gifts. Items were given by Misses E. White, E. Keen, M. Laughlan, C. Marks and B. Edwards. The evening was spent in games and competitions. Those present were: Mesdames Keen and Bartram, Misses Mabel Rutledge, M. Henderson, E. White, B. Edwards, J. Mullens, M. Wall, C. Marks; M. Laughlan, E. Keen, M. and L. Ward, A. Wilspii and L. Kefcn. On Saturday evening a dance was held in the Waltham Schoolroom in aid of the school heating funds. Music was provided by Mr L.. O’Loughlin’s orchestra. Mr Bert Blackler was M.C. A Monte Carlo one-step competition was won by Miss A. Newton and Mr A. Martin, and a Boston competition by Miss D. Evans and Mr F. Jones. Extra dance music was played by Mrs Bull and Mr K. Wilkie. Another enjoyable dance, also in aid of the school heating fund, was held in the Waltham Schoolroom on Tuesday evening. Mr L. O’Loughlin’s orchestra provided the music, and Mr B. Blackler was M.C. Extra dance music was played by Mr D. Collins and Mr W. Sweeney. A Monte Carlo one-step competition w r as won by Miss O. Heaston and Mr Blackaby.
