TWO RECORDS LOWERED AT LOCAL SWIMMING CARNIVAL .

J. O. Hattersley and Miss R. Low Each Put Up Very Fine Performances.

Two new records were established at the swimming carnival held by the East Christchurch Club at the Tepid Baths last evening - . Miss R. Low, in winning the 50 yards junior girls’ provincial championship, reduced Miss A. Mather’s record of 36sec for the distance (which had stood since 1921) to 34 2-ssec. In the 100 yards intermediate boys’ championship, J. O. Hattersley cut V. M’Tigue’s record of 64sec to 61 2-ssec. Miss Low’s performance was particularly meritorious, as she had no opposition in her race and was obliged to swim over the course by herself. Her time was only 3-ssec outside the New Zealand fresh water record for the distance. Last year Miss Low won all the junior girls’ championship races in Canterbury, but her form ldst night showed a great improvement on the best she did last season, and she bids fair now to prove one of the best juniors in the country. She is certainly the most promising schoolgirl who has swum in Canterbury since Miss Gwitha Shand. In reducing the record for the intermediate boys’ event, Hattersley swam splendidly. It was expected by many that the holder of the title, E. M’Conville (who also won the national title over this distance last season) would prove the winner, particularly as Hattersley had recently suffered an accident which had interfered with his training. After the first length of the bath had been covered, however, there was never any doubt as to who would be the winner. Hattersley, who was making his debut in intermediate championship events, is a strongly-built lad with a sweeping stroke that gives him plenty of pace and permits him to stay well. Last season M’Conville occupied 66 2-5 sec in winning this event, and accounted for the national title in 64 l-ssec. The New Zealand record for the distance is held by W. Cameron, who registered 59 4-ssec. Hattersley’s time last night was 1 3-ssec outside that figure. His form promises so well at present that it would not be surprising if he goes much nearer to it before the season is much

The men’s 220 yards championship of Canterbury provided a very easy win for A. T. F. Stokes, the holder of the title. He was not bustled at any part of the journey, and could probably have gone a good deal faster had there been any necessity for it. His time was a fifth of a second longer than the time in which he won this event last season, and 2 1-5 sec longer than the time he recorded in winning the New Zealand title over the distance at Wellington in February last The handicap races provided some keen swimming, and the performances showed that the younger swimmers are improving fast. The diving competition was productive of some first-class displays, and it is indicative of the improvement that has been made m this art by the lady divers that two ot them took the first two positions trom a large number of male divers, including the best men in this department m Canterbury. Miss Foote, the winner, lias recently come to Christchurch from Dunedin, where she was the champion lady diver last year. She also represented Otatro in ihe diving events at the i\e\\ Zealand championships. Miss Smith, who filled second place, was champion 1-fl. diver of Canterbury last season and filled third place in the L?'",'??£i~ Mon -it tin- New Zealand championships. They* are both finished divers, and should do well in the national competitions u th The r follow?ng°were the results:— r-n,., 1c -Junior Girls’ Championship of Cante.-b.u-y (record, 36sec. A.
