MEETING OF BOARD IS INTERRUPTED.

PORT MATTERS WILL BE DISCUSSED AT SITTING LATER. The Lyttelton Harbour Board to-day had an exceptionally long order paper. A deputation from the Port and City League in regard to a grant for a commission of inquiry into the Tunnel Road took up a good deal of time. Members of the board had arranged to leave for port at 1.15 pjn., to discuss there access to the wharves and other questions. It was necessary to abandon a large part of to-day’s business. Questions that did not come up will be dealt with at a special meeting on December 18. Amongst questions held over for that meeting are two motions by Mr H. M. Chrystall. One of these is: “That in view of the lack of swingingroom for ships in the inner basin, and the desirability of planning harbour works at least five years ahead of requirements, the engineer should be instructed to prepare plans and estimates for the construction of a new breakwater outside Gladstone Pier, the cutting off of the outer arm of Gladstone Pier, and the conversion of Gladstone Pier into a modern wharf complete with transit sheds.” The other motion is: “That the question of changing the name of ‘Port Lyttelton’ to ‘Port Christchurch,’ and the name of ‘Lyttelton Harbour Board to ‘North Canterbury Harbour Board,’ should be referred to the Harbour Improvement Committee for consideration and report,” The following members attended today’s meeting: Messrs H. Holland, M.P. (chairman), F. Horrell, J. Leslie, E. J. Howard, M.P., F. E. Sutton, R. Galbraith, W. J. Walter, H. T. Armstrong, M.P., W. T. Lester, H. M. Chrystall, F. L. Pamham. R. T. M’Millan, W. G. Gallagher and Captain H. Monro.
