BROADSIDING BILL FOR MONICA PARK TO-NIGHT.
To mark the occasion of the amalgamation of the interests of Stadiums, Ltd. (Christchurch) and Christchurch Speedways, Ltd., the two companies previously operating in Christchurch, a special programme has been arranged for to-night at the Monica Park Speedway. The big event is the one-mile championship of Canterbury, for which the twelve leading local riders have entered. This will be a scratch race from what is technically known in broadsiding circles at a rolling start. For such a start, the competitors, three in a heat, ride round the track together, coming down the straight “ full bore ” and In a line. Then, at the dropping of the starter’s flag, they leave the mark to fay their machines into a " slide ” as they come to the bend. Nothing is more spectacular or thrilling' than to see crack broadsiders taking a bend, and tonight’s big race should be one of the best events of the year. The winner will be crowned the champion of Canterbury, and from the placed men next week’s Golden Helmet competitors will be picked. The ex-English Park riders have all entered for to-night’s events, and on the new track they will show patrons how well they can “ slide.” E. Marsh, J. Carter, F. Shannan, and all the other local men will compete in this “ cinder-shifting ” programme to-night, and the public are assured of a thrilling evening’s sport. Practically all the Stadium is available at 2s seats, and by telephoning No. 31-ZO2 a limited number of reserves can be obtained for 3s. Derry’s Band will play during the evening. ___________________
