AUSTRALIANS SEARCH FOR SECOND KEEPER.
One of the questions that is being discussed among cricketers is that of who is to be the second wicketkeeper in the team for England next year (says an Australian critic). Oldfield, perhaps, was hardly at his best last season, but no one imagines that anv departure from his previous high standard was anything but temporary, and unless something unexpected happens this season, he must be the first choice for this important position. For the second wicketkeeper, however, there are several candidates—L. O’Connor, H Davidson, J. Ellis, and C. Walker. Ellis filled the position on the last tour, but Oldfield was in such brilliant form all the season that he was given compara tively few opportunities. O’Connor has many supporters, because of his double qualification as a keeper and an opening batsman; while Sydney people are pressing the claims of Davidson, who is in the unfortunate position of having to play second fiddle in his State to Oldfield. Now there is another candidate in the field, in Walker, and South Australians are de daring emphatically that he is the one for the position. Walker made a brii liant debut in the match between South Australia and New South Wales, in Sydney, last season, when, in the two innings of the Sydney men, he stumped five and caught three, and his work in the match against the M.C.C. team in Adelaide earned the high commendation of the critics.
