At the annual meeting of the Riccarton branch of the W.C.T.U., Mrs C. Barrell presided. A temperance lecturette was given on the destructive effect of alcohol on the digestive organs. Several? members accepted an invitation from the Riccarton “Y” Branch, to be present at their “wind-up” social on December 14. Letters were received from Mrs T. E. Taylor, Dominion President, inviting all members to a garden party at her residence on December 14. In conjunction with three other uniontt Riccarton is responsible for the cake stall. Arrangements are well in hand for the W.C.T.U. and Band of Hope concert to be held on December 6. The treasurer was instructed to send out the usual donations for “Christmas cheer.” Superintendents’ reports were read, and showed keen interest in the working of the different departments. Regret was expressed that Mrs Donaldson and Miss Dempsey had to relinquish office this year, and Mrs Conihan and Miss Aleharry were elected in their stead! All other officers were re-elected. A special vote' of appreciation was passed to Miss Russell for the constant and very great assistance she renders to the union.
