SUN-BATHING URGED BY HEALTH REPORT.
RECOMMENDATIONS OF COMMITTEE PLACED BEFORE CITY COUNCIL.
As the outcome of Health Week, the committee which directed operations
made a number of recommendations to the City Council at its meeting last evening, one of which included a recommendation that sunbathing be supported. After reviewing the work done during Health Week, the committee put forward the following proposals: (1) That the attention of the Government be drawn to the educational value of films and to suggest that a percentage of the films shown in all theatres throughout the Dominion should be on health or educational subjects. (2) That the Dairymen’s Association be requested to donate a supply of milk and the fruiterers a supply of fruit to the Kindergarten schools daily. (3) That the City Engineer be instructed to see that all garbage carts are covered and the inspectors instructed to enforce the by-law relating to the covering of refuse receptacles. (4) That steps be taken to have all open drains properly covered. NoteSix men. are employed sweeping these drains, their wages being £1250 per annum. If the cost was capitalised this would provide a sum of £20,000 and would be sufficient to cover all the drains. (5) That all complaints relating to nuisances should be sent direct to the Town Clerk. (6) That sunlight bathing be encouraged in every way. The Mayor (the Rev J. K. Archer), before the recommendations were discussed, thanked the committee for its efforts. The first recommendation was adopted. In regard to recommendation No 2, the Mayor said that he thought that it was a bit “hot.” He asked if the council was seriously asking for such a gift. Councillor P. W. Sharpe: We should have our own supply. Councillor E. 11. Andrews: That is a kindergarten idea. * The Mayor said that he thought that the request was too great, and the clause was not adopted. Clause 3 was adopted unanimously. In regard to clause 4, the Mayor said that it had been adopted as a principle by the council. Councillor T. H. Butterfield said that it would be distinctly dangerous to the community to close in some of the drains. The clause was approved. Councillor Thacker, as chairman of Health Week Committee, said that clause 5 was to direct attention to the fact that if complaints were made direct to the Town Clerk, they would receive immediate attention. The clause was adopted. The sunbathing clause then came up, the Mayor’s query “What about this?” being greeted with laughter. Councillor F. R. Cooke said that they could submit the matter to the Builder’s Association with a suggestion that in building houses, the north-east corner of each house be provided with a sun porch or glassed porch so that sunbathing could take place. Councillor A. E. Fraer asked if anything could be done to provide sunbathing at the baths. The Mayor suggested that this clause should be referred to the Baths Committee for consideration. Councillor Lyons: The entertainment branch, I presume, sir.
