INFLUENCE OF SCHOOL LIFE EMPHASISED.
GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S FAREWELL MESSAGE. YY ELLINGTON, October 29. Ilis interpretation of the meaning of tradition in a school was outlined by the Governor-General (Sir Charles Tergusson) in a farewell address to the boys of YY ellington College yesterday. His Excellency was accompanied by Lady Alice Fergusson. The school was assembled in the memorial hall. “This is ‘good-bye,’ boys, and I do: sincerely wish the school prosperity,” said his Excellency. “Do treasure up the recollections of the traditions that have built up the reputation of the school, and realise that everybody has a responsibility of carrying on those traditions. One last word: Stick firmly to your religious life, because you will find the world a pretty cold, hard place where you will have all kinds of temptations. Stick fast to the faith you have been brought up in, however much others may scoff at it. It is the only sure foundation on which you can build.” Referring to the fact that Wellington College took its name in the same way that YY’ellington College at Home took it, he said there was one interesting point in connection with the taking of the name of that great Duke. The two greatest military commanders of that day were YY T ellington and Napoleon, each a great man in his own -way, but there was one difference between them.
