REFEREE DISQUALIFIES BOTH CONTESTANTS IN BOXING BOUT.

(Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, October 30. In reporting to the Te Aroha Boxing Association on the recent featherweight bout for a purse of £IOO between Tommy Griffiths, of Dunedin, and Frank Taylor, of Auckland, which ended in the disqualification of both boxers, the referee, Mr R. Neale, of Auckland, states: “ Early in the second round I became suspicious that the men were not boxing to the best of their ability. I watched the progress of the bout very closely, and at the end of the fourth round I had made up my mind that my earlier suspicion was well founded. “At that stage, it was apparent t< me that there was some mutual undei standing between the boxers in rela tion to the manner in W'hich they in tended to conduct the contest. 1 there upon called the men together early ii the fifth round, and made known t< them in no uncertain terms my opinipi of their tactics, and warned them that if considerable improvement was no shown from that time on, they wouk both be disqualified. On resumption their work did improve momentarily but they quickly resumed their formei tactics. I therefore disqualified botl contestants in Round 7.” The Ta Aroha association has for warded the report to the New Zealanc Boxing Association.
