Mr W. D. Campbell, of Timaru, spent the week-end in Christchurch. Major O. H. Mead, New Zealand Staff Corps; lias been appointed Staff Officer-in-Charge, No. II Regimental District, Dunedin. Professor T. A. Hunter of Victoria College, Wellington, reached Christchurch on Saturday from the north. Mr D. £. S. Mason, who for the last three years has occupied the position of assistant-engineer to the Otago Ha*Dour Board, has been appointed engineer to the Bluff Harbour Board in succession to Mr R. A. Adams, who has resigned. Mr Mason was educated in Dunedin at the Otago Boys’ High School, and after leaving school was employed for two years with the en gineering firm of Sparrows, Ltd., and for one year with Andersons, Ltd. of Lyttelton. He served in the war for three years, and on returning to New Zealand took employment with the New Plymouth firm of Blair, Mason* Lee and Owen. He joined the engineering staff of the Otago Harbour Board eight years ago, and since 1926 has occupied the position of assistantengineer. Mr Mason expects to take up his new duties at the beginning of December.

At the annual meeting of the Headmasters' Association, a motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Dr Charles Chilton. Mr Arthur Lilly went to Temuka yesterday to act as judge at the musical and elocutionary competitions being held there. The Rev F. E. Harry, who has been ill for the past two or three months, has recovered sufficiently to resume his ministry in the Vivian Street Baptist Church, Wellington. Mr W. H. Dixon, conductor of the Royal Christchurch Musical Society, has been appointed judge of the musical sections at the next festival of the Gore Competitions Society. The staff of Messrs John Burns and Co., Ltd., met on Saturday morning to bid farewell to Mr Richard Smith, manager of the hardware department, who, after nine years’ association with the firm, is leaving to take up business on his own account in Blenheim. Mr W. Dunkley presented Mr Smith with a handsome travelling rug from his fellow workers, and wished him every success in his new undertaking. Mr Smith suitably replied, thanking the staff for their gift.
