SUMNER BURGESSES SUPPORT TUNNEL ROAD COMMISSION.

The urgent need for further inquiry into the Tunnel Road scheme was stressed at the monthly- meeting of the Sumner Burgesses’ Association on Saturday. The president, Mr A. J. Scott, explained that the present position was that the Government had promised #*looo towards the cost of a Commission of Investigation, but that nothing further could be done until the balance of the money required was guaranteed. The Prime Minister had told the Port and City League that he believed nothing of more importance to Canterbury and the South Island could be done than the work in view. Mr Scott moved the following resolution:— “That this association suggests to the Sumner Borough Council that it should give a lead to other local bodies by offering to contribute towards the cost of the proposed commission of inquiry on the Tunnel Road Scheme.” This was seconded by Mr Buxton. Several members spoke in support of the motion on its being made clear that only a small contribution was suggested. The motion was carried unanimously and it was decided to refer the matter to the Council of the United Burgesses' Association.
