ART GALLERY SITE.

To the Editor. Dear Sir,—May I be allowed to protest against the people’s heritage being taken for a site for the Art Gallery. The Botanical Gardens are closed at sundown and when an Art Society’s exhibition is being held it is open till 9 p.m. How much of the gardens will be taken up for this place? Are the big gates to be moved and a roadway made to it? If not, how is access to be gained while the annual show is being held? In one sense it would be a good idea to place it at the back of the Museum, for if the design is carried out in its entirety it certainly wants hiding. In the old days the present gallery was called a morgue—this one looks like a mausoleum. I question the right of those in power to place this gallery on an open space which belongs to the people, as they have not the people’s authority to do so.—l am, etc., ONE OF THE OLD SCHOOL.
