COVERED STREET PLANNED IN CITY.

NOVEL STRUCTURE TO BE ERECTED ON TATTERSALL'S BLOCK.

Through the services of Messrs H. G. Livingstone and Co. an option has been secured over the property owned by Messrs H. Matson and Co., and known as “Tattersall’s.” This property has frontages to both Cashel Street and Hereford Street. The area of the land is two roods one and two-tenth perches, and plans have been prepared by Mr B. J. Ager, architect, for the building which it is proposed to erect on this site. The intention of those concerned is to erect on each of the two frontages a building to be constructed of ferro-concrete and to contain four storeys. The ground floor of these buildings will be used as shops. The remaining floors will be subdivided into offices, each floor to have twentyrooms and each suite a strongroom. Every room will have direct lighting and both buildings will be centrally heated. Entrance to the offices will be obtained from the centre of each building by way of circular lifts with bronze fittings and by marble staircases. These will be situated in the middle of a private roadway which will connect Hereford Street with Cashel Street. This thoroughfare will be laid down with Carrara pavement to specially selected design. On each side over the whole length of the block shops will be erected, designed and fitted on the most modern lines. The whole of the shops will be

centrally heated and each shop will have its own lavatory accommodation. The whole will be covered from the weather in a manner providing for the maximum amount of light and ventilation, being designed on the lines of the large Italian arcades and having the effect of a naturally lighted street in the daytime. At night it will be brilliantly lighted by electricity. Special attention is being paid to the exterior lighting of the shops on the main frontages and domed top lights in metal finish and a special lighting system will be provided for the exterior of the building. The plans of the building indicate that it will be an imposing structure 'and a considerable asset to the city. For soipe time there has been a noticeable increase in traffic and business conducted in the eastern portion of Cashel Street, and it is considered that this new building will provide a popular pathway from Cashel Street through to Hereford Street and the Square. A company will be formed to finance the project. __.
