ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN BULLER DISTRICT.
(Special to the “ Star.”) WESTPORT, October 26. Considerable activity is taking place in the Buller district at present in connection with road construction, and very shortly hundreds of men should be employed in repairing damage done by the recent earthquake. Two survey parties are now out on the Karamea Road, and as soon as it is definitely decided which route the new road is to follow (via the c<sast or over the old route) it is expected that 200 men will be put on immediately and the work of opening up the road pushed on as speedily as possible in order that Karamea's extensive dairying district will again be connected with Westport. • The work of opening up the LyellMurchison road is now proceeding apace, and it is expected that a sixfoot track will be completed by February. The track is being constructed first in order to facilitate the handling of the men and gear.
With the starting of a motor service to Greymouth via the new coastal road <a route which has been freely commented upon by the Press owing to its wonderful scenic attractions), an impetus has been given the work of constructing the three bridges. The Porari is now well under wav and a start is being made with the Punakaikai. When these are complete all the men and gear will be put on to the erec tion of the big bridge over the Fox River. All these rivers are fordable in fine weather and certain works are being carried out at the Fox River to improve the approaches to the ford
Before the construction of the coast road, Westport's only outlet was through the Buller Gorge, and the opening of this road has been looked forward to by the people of Westport for some considerable time.
