Particulars of the Railway Department’s arrangements in connection with the Banks Peninsula races at Motukarara on Saturday, November 2, are advertised in another column. A fast passenger service will be run from Christchurch and holiday excursion fares will be in operation.

What has become of the old-fashion-ed marigold so . popular in the gardens, of our grandmothers? (asks a London Exchange). The familiar flower lost favour some years ago, but it has returned to a place of honour, transformed and re-named. It no longer sold or catalogued as “marigold.”. It has blossomed into a “Calendula,” by which name it. is now given a place in the proudest suburban garden. It is true that the modern marigold has been greatly improved in size and colour, but the joke is that its “new” name, Calendula, is merely its botanical name. It was originally so christened because it could often be found in bloom in every month of the calendar. The Southland Rugby Football Union have obtained the authority of the Minister of Internal Affairs for the extension of their art union, which now closes on Monday, November 11. The Southland Union are at present the holders of the Ranfurly Shield, and the object of the art union is to provide funds for their sports ground in Southland. Tickets (Is each) are on sale throughout the city and suburbs, or direct from Mr C. W. Hervey, supervisor for Canterbury. 6
