Light rain fell at Wellington this morning, but the weather was fine at Trentham. Aberfeldy and Elysianor disputed favouritism in the Glen Hur- ' dies, with Brigadier Bill and Novar also ; well backed. Elysianor led over the : first hurdle, but Aberfeldy then took charge. Kapuna joined him at the end of half a mile, and a little further on < Kapuna and Beaumont went on, with Aberfeldy, Tresham, Brigadier Bill, : Modern and Elysianor all handy. Beau- i raont drew out at the home turn and j won by a length from Aberfeldy, who j just stalled off Tresham by a head. Modem, Kapuna and Elysianor were , next.- ,

Chief Link was a hot favourite for the Taita Handicap. Tray Bond soon was in charge, with Gesture, Merry Peel, Chief J>ink, Lady Pam. and Ball Dress also prominent. Gesture took charge 100 yards from the post, winning by a length from Tray Bond, who beat Chief Link by a neck. Lady Pa..i, Ball Dress, Merry Peel, and Joie de Val were next. Gesture won at Masterton and is smart. Tray Bond showed great speed.

Commendation, Night Lad, Cashier Keddar and Prickles were heavily backed in the Wainui Handicap. Admiral Drake was first out and soon was joined by Latin Quarter and Night Lad, with Great Charter, Cashier, Athoi>pear and Commendation handy. The 'ield ran unchanged for half a mile,

when Prickles and Black Duke moved up. Night Lad and Cashier were done when the straight* was reached. Com- \ mendation, Prickles and Black Duke hallenged the leader inside the distance, Commendation beating Prickles by a head. Admiral Drake was a length away, beating Black Duke. Atholspear rider after going two furlongs. Sea Cob was a warm favourite for the Rimutaka Handicap. Lucky Light and Sea Cob led for two furlongs, when the latter dropped back, Ducky Light and Money Mint going on from Pari. These three led to the straight, where Money Mint retired, and several others moved up. Lucky Light won by over a length from Tourist, while half a length away came Royal Black, just in front of My Own. Pari, Shortly, Royal Opera and King’s Jest. Semper Paratus ran a good race, fading out in the last fifty yards. Simba was much better backed than Satisfy in the Wellesley Stakes. Nipable led Satisfy, Watch Officer and Simba to the course proper. Watch Officer then shot out, winning easily by two lengths from Chrysology, who finished fast and beat Simba by a length. Satisfy was a length away, with Nimble close up Satisfy suffered slight inter ference in the straight, but was square ly beaten. Watch Officer showed brilliant speed, and had the race won a furlong from home.

In the Waitemata Handicap, Tama hine (£741), Eva Reta (£458) and Audo Spray (£353) carried the bulk of the money. Audo Spray was first out from Lady Eva and Tamahine (who was breaking at this stage). Tamahine was two lengths clear of Paradigm crossing the top, with Peterson four lengths further back, followed by Linnet the Great and Direct Action. Entering the straight, Tamahine was still in charge from Paradigm, Linnet the Great and Peterson. I-n a good finish, Tamahine got the verdict by a neck from Para digm, who broke over* the last stages of the race, with Linnet the Great two lengths away. Peterson was fourth. In the Improvers’ Handicap, twentythree horses went to the post. Betting was brisk, with the favourite, Jackie Logan, carrying (£1010), while Salient (£513) and Haroto (£376) also had friends. Haroto was about a dozen lengths clear crossing the top, with My Thorpe, Pavlova, Wrackeen and Haerangi Pai handy. Haroto led into the straight from My Thorpe, Haerangi Pai, Wrackeen, Lady Barrington and Jackie Logan, and, easily holding his own, he won comfortably by two lengths from My Thorpe who beat Wrackeen by four lengths. Lady Bar rington was fourth. In the Spring Handicap, Wrackler was favourite and carried (£1627), the next in demand being To;pedo Huon (£913) and Jean M’Elwyn (£896). When they came around again, Native Prince had moved up third to Nelson Tasker and Sister Reatrice. Then came Wrackler, Dillon Iluon and Jean M’Elwvn. Along the back the last time, Nelson Tasker still had charge, with Native Prince, Sister Beatrice Wrackler and Jean M’Elwyn racing as named. There was no alteration acrocs the top, and Nelson Tasker was first into the straight from Native Prince and Wrackler. Then came Jean M’Elwyn and Sister Beatrice. Nelson Tasker tired in the run home and Wrackler came through and won by a length from Jean M’Elwyn, who beat Native Prince by two lengths. Nelson Tasker was fourth, followed by Torpedo Huon, Sister Beatrice. Great Delight, Gold Dial and Dillon Huon. Scratched: Enawah. Won by a length and a half. Time—3min 28sec. For the Parnell Handicap, Great Parrish was favourite with £l4ll, with Queen Elizabeth (£796) and Ngahuia (£705) next in the order of betting. Belle Axworthy was first to turn for home, with Great Parrish close up Then came Warspite and Queen Elizabeth. Great Parrish drew out in the run to the post and got the verdict by a length and a half from Belle Axworthy, wdio beat Warspite by tu’O lengths. Queen Elizabeth was fourth In the Mountain Handicap, Bingen Starr was favourite (£1370), while Etta Cole (£903) and Gold Sovereign (£Bl7 > also had a good following. Along the back Etta Cole was in charge from Tradesman, who was breaking. Then came Gold Sovereign, Peter M’Kinney and Raima. Crossing the top, Peter M’Kinney and Etta Cole were on terms, but the last-named left her feet, and Peter M’Kinney led into the straight from Gold Sovereign, Raima and Tiger Salve. Peter M’Kinney, Gold Sovereign and Raima then fought out a tight finish, the first-named getting the decision by half a head from Gold Sovereign, who bored in on Raima over the last bit, and beat him by a neck Etta Cole was fourth.

In the October Handicap the War-plane-Cartnel bracket was favourite, carrying £1264. Next in request were Linkman (£1200) and Joy Bird (£734) Crossing the top Toy Bird led Sunfish and Warplane with Stanmoor and Goldman handy. DEATH OCCURS OF AUCKLAND TRAINER. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, October 26. The death occurred in the Auckland Hospital yesterday of Mr P. Conway, the well-known Ellerslie trainer. Mr Conway had not enjoyed good health for some time past, and went into hospital three weeks ago, but failed to improve. Among the horses trained by Conway were Llewellyn and Hokemai, with which he won several hunt club cups.

RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. Saturday. It was dull and threatening when work started at Riccarton this morning, and it continued so all the morning. The outside of the trial grass was open for fast work, but save where mentioned it was not used. Trainers preferred the plough, which was in great order, but slow. The heavy atmosphere was all against fast times being registered. Honour and Jaleux were sent twice round together. The first was done at half-pace and the second at threequarter pace. Both horses are in good order. Chide, with a feather-weight up, galloped one mile and a half. He was galloping strongly at any stage, but was not out to do his utmost. He took 2min 50sec and pulled up well. Meprisant, who is booked to try for classic honours, covered ten furlongs in 2min 16sec, and did it very com fortably. He is improving steadily. Stately carried a feather-weight to the end of a mile in lmin 44 2-ssec, and it was a good performance, for she finished particularly well. Sea Raid, with a small boy up, left a mile behind in lmin 46sec, and coulc) have not done much better She will be ridden by the stable apprentice atRangiora on Monday.

Moratorium, who is not ready, sprint ed five furlongs in lmin 6sec.

Chickwheat and Malmsey, who were carrying light-w’eights, were together and not all out at the business end of seven furlongs done in lmin 33*sec Caterpillar beat Kentish Lady pointlessly over half a mile in the brilliant time of 48 4-ssec. Both were carrying feather-weights. This was done on the grass. Spoon and The Geisha were separ ately sprinted over short courses, but they were not out to do their best Dutch Money finished well at the conclusion of a gallop over six furlongs on the grass that took lmin 17 2-s?eo Honeycomb was given strong pace work, and Juniper also had an easy morning. This trio will not be racing at Rangiora. Their trainer, W G Hobbs, has decided that Kindling is the only one of his team that he will take there.

Pahautanui dashed over half a mile on the grass in 50 l-ssec, and did it well. This gallop was done up the back. Te Awhina and Bulolo were matched over half _ a mile on the grass, with feather-weights up. Te Awhina broke away first, but was steadied, and Bulolo rushed past her. She caught him again a furlong from home and finished in front. The time, 51sec. was lisappointing. Red Heckle gave Aladdin several lengths’ start in a sprint on the grass over four furlongs up the back The pair finished together in 49 4-ssec Red Heckle looks very bright. Buoyant was sprinted five furlongs He was all out at the finish, and the last three furlongs took 39 2-ssec.
